Male Golden Retrievers generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand from 23 to 24 inches tall. Females are generally smaller weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. That means your little pup can become sad and withdrawn when they are stressed out, which can lead to depression if it lingers for too long. To get them feeling happy and relaxed again , you might want to meet with a vet to see what's going on—and to rule out any physical conditions. You can also try a few habit changes and lifestyle tweaks to get them back to normal. I see depression a lot in dogs whose families have gone through a divorce," says Dr. Ochoa adds that dogs can get very attached to people and other pets, so when these relationships change, they can show signs of depression. If you think your dog is down in the dumps, here are the signs to look for and ways to help perk them back up. Mistreated Depression in Labradors There are several things that can cause a temporary or clinical, long-term depression in Labradors. If an owner or pet-friend dies, Labs will often become obviously sad. Their behavior changes and can be very worrisome to their owner. If you know that your dog has lost a pal, then you can sometimes just give him a couple weeks. I am no expert, but there seems to be a legit mourning period for dogs just like there is for people. Sometimes only time can fix those types of hurts. On the other hand, if you cannot figure out why your dog is moping around and refusing to eat, then you should get him to the vet as soon as possible. Bored Labradors were bred to be very active dogs. They need a serious amount of exercise. This is a ticket for one on a long guilty trip. Get your dog outside and go have some fun. One trip outside with a really good, long round of fetch, and your Lab will be back to his happy old self. You should consider 45 to 60 minutes of hard exercise an absolute must for full-grown Labs. Illness Apparent sadness can be an indicator that your dog does not feel well. An upset stomach or sore legs can slow a Labrador down and put a damper on their typical upbeat attitude. If you think your dog might be sick or sore, give her a gentle rub down. If you find a gentle spot, then you may have found the root cause as to why your Lab is sad. Bad Diet Just like trying to put gasoline in a diesel engine; a bad diet will slow down a Labrador. Remember, Labradors are bred for high octane energy. But if you are giving your dog lousy fuel, she will not be able to go at her typical high speed. She will lack the energy to do what she really wants to do—run and chase and run some more. Mistreated This is the worst kind of dog sadness—neglect and abuse. Dogs that have been neglected for long periods of time will develop a mistrust of people. When it comes to Labrador Retrievers, they are typically a very trusting dog. In fact, I believe that in order to be truly happy, Labs need strong relationships with the people in their lives. If they are robbed of those bonds, it will cause these typically friendly, happy dogs to become depressed and sad. It is not uncommon to find rescue Labs with this forlorn, sad look on their face. Their eyes can seem unusually shallow or hollow. The great news is that it usually only takes an extended experience with a loving family to restore the life to their eyes and their behavior.
