I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. From there we began showing dairy goats, angora goats, and pygmy goats in 4-H, FFA, and open shows from .When my son went off to college, we decided to sell off our dairy goat herd and focus on our Pug Breeding Program. Once we were able to focus on our Pug Breeding Program more we began to search for pugs of unique colors that we didn't already own. In I quit my job, and started breeding pugs full time. My new job title is a "Stay at Home Pug Mommy". Instead we retire them and they live out the remainder of their lives here at Tipping Point Farm, playing, eating, sleeping day after day, and spending time with our family. After all, Pugs are the ultimate companion and mans best friend. They will always be there for you no matter what, whether they are trying to cheer you up, steel your food, or give you kisses. With such a large demand for our pugs, I have now brought in my mom's dogs to be a part of my breeding program, so everyone is able to have their own Tipping Point Farm Pug. My Mom owns a farm thirty minutes away from me where she lives and raises her own pugs with help from me. On February 11th, , my first pug, "Cheese", the one who started it all passed away suddenly. The whole family was devastated after learning of her passing and spending so many years with such a great dog. I was heart broken, I lost my best friend. This one dog was the reason behind my whole pug breeding program. I loved this dog so much that I wanted to breed pugs so everyone could have "their own Cheese". After all, Pug love is like no other, you are their world and they become a family member. Even though Cheese is no longer here with us, I know that I am lucky enough to have got to spend so many years with her and have her daughters, grand daughters, and great grand daughters. When it comes to our pugs, Health is our 1 priority and then of course color! From day one, we are directly involved with our puppies, we help them come into the world and love them everyday till they go to there new family. Please feel free to call or email me anytime you have a question or are interested in a pug. Thank you for taking the time to read the Story behind our farm. We are looking forward to hearing from you and your family and to adding a new member to your family. I apologize for this and will be back to keeping up with my website for .As soon as we learned of the diagnosis, we made arrangements to meet with the surgeon. Unfortunately after the scans were taken, a spot was found on his liver which gave him a terminal diagnosis 2 months without chemo, 6 months with chemo. In March of he opted to start a chemo regiment every 3 weeks to hopefully extend his life expectancy. During the next few months him and I created a bucket list of things he wanted to do, which we were able to complete in between his visits to the hospital and chemo treatments. In August his cancer was reassessed to see if the chemo treatments had been working. The results were heartbreaking, the chemo hadn't worked and his body was full of cancer. Within a month of this heart breaking news my fathers health deteriorated, he was back and forth between hospice and the emergency room until he lost his battle to cancer on September 22, .My fathers loss has been extremely difficult, but I am now able to start focusing on my breeding program once again. As of right now we have big plans for .For more information about our plans, please contact me with any inquiries regarding current and future puppies or keep checking back for updates. We appreciate your patience and look forward to adding the newest fur-member to your family. The couple is passionate about their puppies and keeps their kennel in accordance with State of Ohio Department of Agriculture regulations. Creekside is committed to making sure all of their puppies are healthy and well socialized — ready for happy homes. They also offer a one-year genetic health guarantee for all of their pups. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get and your Pug will be good as gold in no time.

In addition to eyeball care, I've had a fresh dental no teeth removed , blood tests, and am as fit as can be. I love to be outside, go for walks, and ride in cars. I'm also delighted to snuggle with my favorite human. If you give belly rubs, I'll love you forever! Some vets say I'm blind but I like to think I have sonar! I don't need a halo and can trot up a few steps or run in the yard without issue. My foster mom and dad haven't trained me on a full flight of steps. I am a gentle soul and would really appreciate a gentle household. I'm intimidated by bigger or assertive dogs, but I currently hang out with two older pugs. They sleep a lot, so it might be nice to mix it up a bit. I prefer to eat alone as I will let my siblings take all my food if they are so inclined. I like blueberries and cantaloupe. Heck, even broccoli is nice. I require one type of eye drops three times a day, so catching that early afternoon eye drop is really important. I am housebroken I sit pretty next to the outside door and wait for someone to let me outside to potty , and I do not use a crate. I eat well. I sleep well. I travel well. And, dang, I'm just a sweetheart! If you can love me as much as I can love you, we may be a perfect match! Come visit me! Noah's angels are:.
We can connect with our laptops or smartphones and buy things online instantly from the comfort of our own homes. First, the vast majority of adverts selling puppies online are fake. In most cases, the dogs never existed, and buyers are duped out of hundreds or thousands of dollars. Many of the puppies for sale on Craigslist have come from puppy mills. These places are run purely for profit and will cut corners to boost their income. They keep their dogs in basic accommodation usually kennels , which are often filthy. The puppies are often weak and sickly, and many die pretty early on. There have also been hundreds of cases where people have bought purebred pups, but these turn out to be mutts. The answer is clear: Avoid Craigslist when buying animals! If you find a reputable local breeder, they will welcome you to the site to visit with them and meet the parent dogs. Some may allow you to see the pups, but access is sometimes restricted to stop them from getting sick. Check out the breeder thoroughly, and be sure to ask questions. A good breeder will tell you to do this anyway, as they have nothing to hide and will be only too pleased to connect you with happy customers who will provide testimonials. Even so, these beautiful animals can be found in shelters across America, along with thousands of other dogs. Instead of buying from a breeder, why not consider giving one of these dogs a forever home? If you think you could provide a loving home to a dog in need, take a look at the following site: 1. They are simply two devoted dog-lovers who spend much of their time helping homeless dogs. All puppies can be a challenge. Like other dogs, the GSD will go through teething. It will need potty training and obedience training. They are very social animals that need company, especially human company. Without this, they become frustrated and sometimes aggressive. German Shepherds shed a lot! Your GSD pup can come in one of 11 standard colors , not just the classic black and tan you often see. GSDs have a lifespan of between 7 and 10 years, and they have a few health concerns to watch out for, including arthritis and hip dysplasia. All good breeders test for the main health problems, which is another reason to use them. There is a special period of learning that occurs during puppy training, which enables young trained puppy to quickly absorb information about their world in PA German Shepherds are dogkind's finest herding and guardian dogs. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.
Final Thoughts Origins of the Jackador At first glance, on paper, the Jackador might seem a little imbalanced. For starters, its parent breeds are significantly different in size and also have different temperaments. However, the more you look into the details of each breed, the more it becomes apparent just how much they have in common. A Labrador lounges on his dog bed Jack Russells, also called Parson Russells , are terrier dogs, standing as high as twelve inches. Initially bred for fox hunting in Britain, these small dogs are now popular as feisty and loyal pets worldwide. Labrador Retrievers are also well-loved pets but are better known for their preeminence as calm, friendly, family dogs. They are the most popular family dog in America. Although they can vary in size, they can get up to one hundred pounds and twenty-five inches tall. Like the Jack Russell , they were also originally bred as working dogs for hunting waterfowl. So, how did these two breeds end up mixing to form the Jackador? As a relatively new designer dog, the Jackador is not recognized by the AKC, but its growth in popularity may add to the push to do so in the near future. The Jackador tops out at twenty inches tall and around fifty pounds. However, on most of these dogs, you can recognize the distinctive, perky tail, a tell-tale trait of both Labs and Jack Russells. Black, brown, and cream are the most popular among the possible body colors. In addition, white markings around the face and chest, which are predominant in Jack Russells, are also typical. A good predictor of the body color of a Jackador will be the body color of its Labrador parent, who is usually the mother. For this reason, chocolate, yellow, or white is also possible coat colors. Typically, these dogs also have short coats, and thanks to their working-breed parents, the coats are water-resistant. Labradors have rounder heads, while Jack Russels tend to have longer snouts and overall pointier features. Jackadors can vary from one dog to the other when it comes to these visual characteristics. However, you can expect a strong, muscular body with a deep, rounded chest, which are common traits in both parent breeds. Initially, both breeds were bred as working dogs, which lends this mix a decidedly hard-working personality with high energy. Because of its working-dog origins, the Jackador needs lots of exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and prevent destructive behaviors. Even though this necessitates extra involvement on the part of owners, Jackadors are also easy to train and highly intelligent. The breed abounds in loyalty from both sides and makes a fantastic family dog for children, as this breed is not aggressive. However, Jackadors, like all other breeds, should be adequately trained and socialized early on. They tend to be protective, and if not trained, can become overprotective. Comparing a Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle which breed is better? Health Conditions While these are generally healthy dogs that can live on average around fourteen years, they can inherit any of the issues that commonly plague their parent breeds. On the Jack Russell side, this means watching out for eye disorders like glaucoma or cataracts. Small dogs can also suffer from luxating patella, a kneecap disease commonly seen in older dogs, as well as hip diseases like hip dysplasia and Legg-Calve-Perthe disease. From the Labrador side, a Jackador could inherit a tendency for recurrent ear infections, heart disease, or progressive retinal atrophy, which leads to eventual blindness. As with many breeds, regular checkups at the vet and a proper diet helps ensure these issues are kept at bay. For many of the diseases affecting joints, keeping excess weight off can help protect against overt wear and tear, which can exacerbate issues. Is a Jackador the Right Fit for You? The most important consideration in whether a Jackador is right for you is the amount of time you spend with it. Whether you adopt a puppy or a full-grown dog , Jackadors need a certain amount of time and attention to behave well but also to stay happy and healthy. Without the right amount of time and attention, Jackadors can act out around the house and become destructive. They can also display unwanted behaviors, like aggression, overprotectiveness, and antisocial qualities, if they are not trained or socialized well. But for those with an active lifestyle who can devote a few hours daily to help exercise their Jackador and keep its mind sharp, then the breed can provide years of loyal companionship. Some Pomeranians are very small and like Jack Russells can end up in adoption shelters Where to Find a Jackador As with many designer breeds, these dogs are available as puppies from many breeders, both reputable and disreputable alike. However, if your heart is set on a Jackador, there is a good chance that you can also find one at a nearby rescue or humane society. Check in your local area to see if any nearby rescues are dedicated to the breed. Final Thoughts In the world of designer dogs, the Jackador might seem like an odd underdog. However, while the size of its parents are strangely mismatched, its personality is evidence of this great breed pairing. These highly intelligent, loyal, and active dogs make wonderful family companions and can sport a wide variety of colors and characteristics common to either side of its family tree. Many shelters and rescue organizations likely have Jackadors for adoption, so check with these organizations for a chance to meet your new best friend. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. To learn more about this crossbreed, it would help to look at the history of Labrador and Jack Russell. We will keep referring to the parent breeds' traits throughout the article to understand where this hybrid comes from and what to expect from it. Jack Russell Terrier The breed gets its name from John Russell, who bred these dogs in the early s to drive away foxes with his barking. They were bred to be hunting dogs and independent problem solvers. This is why JRTs are courageous and self-reliant. They can figure out their own ways to go about things and solve problems. The breed standard of JRTs varies because of their broad genetic make-up. Due to the distinction, the breed has even been divided into two separate breeds in England: one is Parson Russell Terrier, with longer legs, and the other is Jack Russell Terriers, having shorter legs. Labrador Retriever Labradors originated in Newfoundland, Canada, and were brought to England in the 19th century. They are hard-working dogs who used to retrieve fish and haul fishermen's boats from the water. Today, they serve society as guide dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs, etc. We've discussed seven uses of Labradors in a separate post. For the last 29 years, Labradors have been the most popular breed in the United States, and for good reasons. They are smart, friendly, playful, and charming. Their high energy levels and intelligence mean that they are easy to train and can work for hours without losing their focus. What do Jack Russell Lab mixes look like? Like all mixed breeds, Jackadors' physical traits vary greatly. They may look like anything between a small Labrador and a big Jack Russell. They're short-to-medium-sized dogs, usually bigger and heavier than their parent Jack Russell but smaller and lighter than Lab. As with any dog breed, male Jackadors are a bit heavier and larger than their female counterparts. Both of Jackadors' parent breeds have water-resistant coats, so Jackadors will likely be fond of water, but some may be afraid of water because of negative experiences at a young age. Their ears are usually floppy but can also be partially erect, and their legs are proportionate to their height, giving them an athletic build. Coat and Colors Labradors come in several colors like black, white, yellow, and chocolate. JRTs are available in standard brown and white colors. Usually, Jackadors' color is determined by Labs, though it's not always the case. The hybrid can have various colors, but popular ones include black, cream, and brown. So, it's safe to say that Jackadors will also be an active breed that will need lots of physical and mental stimulation. You'll also require chewing toys and perhaps some puzzles to keep them occupied indoors. Similarly, both parent breeds are also hunting dogs, which means Jackadors will have a strong hunting instinct. Training will help reduce this behavior, but it cannot be eliminated entirely. So, it's critical to familiarize them with other animals at an early age, or else they'll instinctively see cats and other small animals as prey. These dogs like to be around their family members, so it's not a good idea to leave them alone for long periods. Doing so can result in destructive behaviors like chewing, barking, urination, etc. Jackadors are usually not an aggressive hybrid. With proper training and socialization, they can become excellent family companions, though it's essential to introduce them to kids at an early age. They must learn to be gentle with children and not chase them. Jackadors can also inherit the loud barking from their parent JRT, which means they will like to make themselves heard. Lastly, like their parent breeds, Jackadors are very loyal, loving, highly energetic, and intelligent. Jack Russells have a mostly white coat, so Jackadors are likely to inherit markings on their head and chest from their parent JRTs. A white chest or partially white face is common in these dogs. Brushing your Jackador's coat once a week and bathing occasionally will keep him clean and happy. Increase the brushing frequency to once or even twice a day during the shedding season. Exercise Labradors are highly energetic dogs, and so are JRTs. As a result, you can expect Jackadors to be just as energetic and active. Be ready to devote lots of exercise and playtime as this hybrid will drive you crazy if you don't give them enough physical activity. Their small size can allow them to adjust to apartments - traditional Labradors not so much! However, you'll have to make up for the lack of physical activity in the form of more exercise and playtime. Having a decent-sized house with a backyard will make a massive difference as it'll give your Jackador space to roam in. Both of the breeds are also very intelligent, so they must receive mental stimulation as well. JRTs are independent problem solvers, and Labs are always eager to work, so consider getting toys, puzzles, and food dispensers for your pet. How much time does your pup need for exercise? Usually, 30 to 60 minutes a day is enough, along with long walks and some running. It's best to divide this period of activity into small chunks throughout the day. As we've discussed, Jackadors become bored and restless without their daily dose of physical activity. They will begin targeting your furniture and chewing everything they can, so they must run around, play, and tire themselves out. Are Jackadors easy to train? Labradors are very intelligent and eager to please their owners. This means they are highly trainable, and you can teach them to do virtually anything, so owners will not have much difficulty training Labs themselves. On the other hand, JRTs were bred to be independent. Like Labs, they are very intelligent and energetic. However, they tend to solve problems on their own and don't depend on their human partners. JRTs are also loud, and they instinctively chase anything that moves. When these breeds are crossed, the resulting Jackadors are also intelligent and energetic, but consistent, rigorous training is required when they're at the puppy stage. This is to make sure they only chase toys and balls rather than cats or other animals. Training is also critical for keeping their barks under control. The Jack Russell Lab mix isn't always suited to homes with small pets or young kids, but early socialization and training will ensure that they are friendly toward children and adults alike. Since both JRT and Labrador are hunting dogs, it's crucial to introduce them to other pet dogs and animals at a young age to avoid any trouble later on. Overall, you can prevent Jackadors' typical behavior issues through positive reinforcement training and physical activity. They'll also benefit from plenty of interaction with other animals and people of all ages from about 10 weeks of age. Are Jackadors healthy dogs? Jackadors are generally healthy, but they can be prone to any of the diseases that plague their parent breeds. It happens when the kneecap is not correctly lined up and usually causes lameness. It's a congenital disease, though the actual misalignment occurs later on in a dog's life. Eye disorders: JRTs are prone to several painful eye diseases like glaucoma abnormally high pressure in the eye , lens luxation displaced eye lens , and cataracts. Legg-Calve-Perthes disease: This is another disease that usually only occurs in small breeds. It is similar to hip dysplasia and is often confused with it. In this condition, the ball of the hip joint is deformed, causing arthritis and wearing. Labradors Ear infections: The large, floppy ears can provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, making Labs more prone to ear infections. This can be prevented by regularly cleaning your pet's ears. Heart diseases: Labs can suffer from a range of heart problems. The most common ones are chronic degenerative valve disease, cardiomyopathy, and heartworm disease. Progressive retinal atrophy: PRA is a group of genetic diseases that affect your pet's retina. The photoreceptors inside the dog's eye deteriorate over time, which eventually leads to blindness. JRTs are not very prone to obesity, but any dog can gain weight with the wrong diet and lack of physical activity. On the other hand, Labradors are voracious eaters and can quickly become overweight, so you should monitor the amount of food your Jackador eats, especially if he takes after his Lab parent. Since there's a huge difference between JRTs and Labs, it's difficult to suggest the exact amount of kibble your Jackador should eat every day. In any case, make sure you only give your pet high-quality dog food designed for small-to-medium-sized dogs. Feeding little and often is the safest option, which means you may have to feed your pet at least three times a day. After every meal, you should also give your dog enough time to digest it before taking him out. The Jack Russell Lab mix is best suited for families that can dedicate enough time and attention to their physical and mental needs. Jackadors can be an excellent companion if you have an active lifestyle, but if your family cannot devote a few hours every day, you'll probably be better off getting a calmer breed. As we've discussed, you don't necessarily need a large home or a backyard, though it's certainly preferred. Early socialization and training are also indispensable, so you'll have to spend extra time on these. JRTs were initially bred to chase away foxes with their loud, consistent barking, so your Jackador might be fond of his own voice. However, he may also inherit Labrador's calm demeanor, in which case you wouldn't have to deal with the barking that much. They may inherit all the best qualities of the parent breeds, or they may get the worst of both worlds. So, only bring a Jackador puppy home if you're ready to deal with whatever traits he will have. We're not trying to scare you, but you should be aware of this fact. Overall, if you're asking yourself, 'should I get a Jackador? This will ensure you get healthy puppies whose parents have been screened for diseases. You will probably have better luck finding a Jackador in shelters or online adoption centers. The History of the Lab The humble Labrador Retriever is up first in our foray into the parent breeds. The Labrador was first created in the s by mixed breeding between a St. The Labrador was originally bred as a sporting and hunting dog but is now primarily a companion pet. Although modern Labrador Retrievers are currently used in many countries as police dogs, disability-assistance dogs, and performing military functions. Labrador Retrievers are among the most popular dog breeds in the Western world. Labrador Retrievers are the most popular dog in the United States! They were first recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in and have long enjoyed huge national popularity, mostly due to their multi-functional nature and the ability to be a loving and loyal companion pet. How Did Labs Come About? The Labrador Retriever is the evolution of crossbreeding between English hunting dogs and the St. Unfortunately, little corroborating information exists. The Jack Russell Terrier was bred by the Reverend John Russell, who produced the dog as a hunting dog to aid in the hunting of foxes. The Jack Russell was small and agile enough to follow the fox into its den and finish the kill. Jack Russell Terriers typically come in various brown colors, some lighter than others, mixed with black and white color patterns. While originally bred as a hunting breed, Jack Russell Terriers are more commonly found now as family pets. The Jack Russell Terrier is a beautiful family dog for the active family unit, requiring intense physical exercise. They love to run and play. This makes them largely unsuitable for the elderly and apartment-style living. They can sometimes exhibit disruptive behaviors like excessive barking if left alone for long periods. The Jack Russell was first bred by the Reverend John Russell in the midth century in England as Russell sought to create the perfect fox-hunting dog. The Jack Russell quickly caught on among hunting pet owners in the UK and has maintained steady popularity. The Jack Russell is one of the most challenging crossbreeds for owners, largely due to certain undesirable characteristics. Excessive barking and certain health conditions that include dental diseases. This hyper dog breed is still crossed with many other different types of dogs, however. Jack Russell Lab mix lifespan What is a Jackador? Because of the drastic size difference between the parent breeds, the mother is usually the Labrador, and the father is the Jack Russell. But as this is a hybrid breed, it is difficult to predict which physical and behavioral traits the offspring will inherit from their parents. However, both breeds were hunting dogs, so we know this mixed breed will inherit the hunting instinct. Yet they have a rich history of being crossed by accident, due to how closely they have worked together on farms and ranches for generations. To understand this crossbreed better, we must look at the history of the Jack Russell Terrier and the Labrador Retriever. This small breed gets its name from Parson John Russell, who bred these dogs during the s as a baying terrier, meaning the dog would flush out the fox with its steady barking but never killed its prey. The Jack Russell worked alongside fox hounds covering extensive distances without slowing down, being independent thinkers brave enough to enter a fox den with an ability to dig. The Labrador Retriever originated in Newfoundland, Canada. As well as a hunting dog, the Labrador Retriever also excels as a guide dog, therapy dog, and service dog. For nearly 30 years, they have ranked as the most popular dog in the USA. The Jackador is a small to medium-sized dog that is often a little bigger and heavier than the Jack Russell but smaller and lighter than the Labrador. Their ears are usually floppy but can be partially erect with their legs in proportion with their size giving them an athletic build. Both parent breeds have a water-resistant coat, so the Jackador will too. This cute cross combines a tiny dog with a large one. These puppies range hugely in adult height. The Jack Russell Labrador mix stands 16 to 20 inches high and can weigh anything from 25 to 50 pounds. Coat Colors and Patterns The Jackador can come in many colors, but notably black, brown, and cream. The Labrador tends to dictate the coat color, but you can often have a white chest or partially white face from the Jack Russell breed. Managing Grooming and Shedding The Jack Russell and the Labrador have short, water-resistant coats that are easy to maintain, so the Jackador will require brushing once a week and a bath when needed. Both parents are shedders, so during the molting season, your Jack Russell Labrador mix will be the same and require brushing more frequently. Your hybrid breed will also need their teeth brushed regularly, their ears cleaned, and their nails trimmed. Jack Russell Labrador Mix Temperament The Jack Russell and Labrador Retriever are working dogs bred for long hours in the field, so the Jackador will also be an active dog requiring plenty of mental and physical stimulation. They need to be introduced to small animals early as this mixed breed, from its hunting heritage, may chase after them as prey, especially if they take more after the Jack Russell parent. They can also inherit loud barking from their Jack Russell parent and like being heard! But like their parent breeds, the Jack Russell Labrador mix will be loyal, loving, energetic and intelligent. You need plenty of time to exercise and play with this mixed breed as they need two walks each day and lots of playtime so they can get rid of some of their energy! Both parent breeds are intelligent, with Jack Russells being problem solvers and Labradors eager to work, so consider getting chew toys, puzzles, and food dispensers to keep your pet occupied. When it comes to obedience training, it all depends on which parent your mixed breed takes after. With its eagerness to please, the Labrador is easy to train, whereas the Jack Russell is an independent dog who can solve problems independently, so it tends to have a stubborn and mischievous streak! Early socialization is crucial to ensure your Jackador is friendly and gentle towards other people and children. Are Designer Dogs Healthy? Mixed breeds like the Jack Russell Labrador mix tend to be far healthier than purebreds. However, they can be prone to some of the health issues that plague their parent breeds, so you need to be aware of some of these conditions, which include: Jack Russell Terrier. Some may resemble the size and appearance of a Labrador if the genes of the Labrador are more dominant as in the case of a Yellow Lab Jack Russell Mix full grown. A Lab Jack Russell Mix full grown reaches its maximum height at around one year of age and may continue to fill out in the chest until he reaches 15 months of age. Some of them may also have a mixture of two or three colors with one color dominating the body and another color concentrated only on the face or legs. The Jackador coat is usually short and water-resistant like most Labradors. It is most probable that a Black Lab Jack Russell is a product of a black purebred Labrador and a hybrid Jack Russell mix with more black fur in its body. Save Big On Dog Essentials! Welcome to our pack! A black mask that envelops their eyes and ears is also common with a white patch around their noses and chin. Yellow is not one of the accepted colors of the Jack Russell, so a Jack Russell Terrier Yellow Lab Mix will most likely inherit the yellow coat color from its Labrador parent. Some tan points may appear on their chest and on their legs. This could be the result of a yellow Labrador with an extremely pale coat that is almost white in color and a typical Jack Russell. It can have the high prey instinct of the Jack Terrier making it pretty energetic and inquisitive. Lab and Jack Russell Terrier Mix love being around the company of their family. They just need early exposure to children and other pets to get them used to their presence since their high prey instinct can lead to nipping or playful biting. The Labrador Retriever and Jack Russell Terrier Mix is not considered an aggressive dog and only appears so if they sense danger because of their protective nature. Unwanted aggressive behaviors are usually a result of poor socialization and boredom. They need to be exposed to different situations and environments at an early age in order to keep their aggression in check. Do Lab Jack Russell Mix bark a lot? They will inherit this from Jack Russells who are trained to alert their master when they caught their prey. The good news is that barking can be minimized through training and making sure that they are not always left alone for long periods of time. Labrador Jack Russell Mix training Jackadors are fairly easy to train because they are intelligent and quick learners. You just need a little bit of patience sometimes and some may even inherit the independent nature of Jack Russell. Russell Terrier Lab Mix can be given a variety of exercises, from running to fast walking, and swimming to hiking in the woods. It is important to keep them active physically and mentally to avoid boredom and anxiety. If you have a backyard, patio, or deck and allow your canine companions to head outside during the day, then it is a good idea to install an automatic dog door. Many dog owners working from home or at the office love having an electronic dog door because they no longer need to open and close the door every time their pooch needs to head out to the backyard or come back into the house. Some owners also said that the electronic dog door is a lifesaver and a time saver. Before you install an electronic dog door, make sure your backyard is fully fenced in to keep your dog safe. A wireless dog fence can be installed on almost any type of terrain. Whether you live on mountainous, hilly, or open terrain, the wireless dog fence can adapt accordingly. It allows your furry friends to roam freely in your backyard while keeping them safe and sound. It will not visually interfere with your beautiful green grass spaces or scenic views. Most dog owners love the protection that wireless dog fences provide. Intruders with bad intentions may be deterred from your property when they see a dog in your yard. They will not want to get close to your property for fear that your pooch may reach them. Jack Russell Lab Mix living conditions Jack Russell Labrador Mix is well-suited to any environment as long as its energy needs are met. Jackadors, who are on the smaller side, may need extra care when temperatures get too cold or too hot especially if they have thin coats. Jack Russell Mix Lab grooming and cleaning Jackador dog is not a high-maintenance dog. Because of their short coats, dirt does not accumulate that much. When you bathe your Jack Russell Mix Lab, be sure to use a dog shampoo that will keep their skin and coat clean, healthy, and moisturized. Also, all they need is regular brushing with a slicker brush to remove any excess hair and let the natural oils in their skin naturally moisturize their fur. Its friendly and intelligent nature makes it a great companion or outdoor dog for singles, couples, or families. We can tell you all about it in this article. Everything, from general information to history, to exercise needs and diet, to health issues, and more. Therefore, it inherits traits, both physical and behavioral, from both parent dogs. Due to the difference in size between both breeds, as a general rule, the mother is the Labrador, and the father is the Jack Russell. However, it could also happen the other way around. The Labrador has been a member of the AKC since as a sporting dog. Both Jack Russells and Labradors were originally bred as working hunting dogs. The Jack Russell Terriers hunted foxes and other smaller animals. Labradors were used to track and then retrieve animals, mainly water ones such as ducks. So Jackadors, as a cross of both parent breeds, have inherited the working hunting dog instincts and traits. And just as both parent breeds, Jackadors are highly social and loving, very intelligent and loyal, and full of energy. Plus, they are super cute! History of the Jack Russell Terrier Mixed Breed The history of a dog breed can do a lot to determine both physical traits and general temperament, as most dogs were originally bred for a specific purpose. That means specific traits were developed and favored over time until they became the norm. As a crossbreed, the Jackador has inherited traits from both Jack Russell and the Labrador. In order to get the full picture, we need to dive into the history of both parent breeds. He is the person that originally bred these dogs, back in the early s. The purpose of the breed was to drive away foxes and to hunt different types of small mammals. They were bred to be independent and intelligent, capable of solving problems by themselves. This is why Jack Russells, as a general rule, are courageous, active, and independent. However, throughout history, there have been many variations of the Russell Terrier. Later on, they spread to other parts of the world. They were originally bred as working hunting dogs, and their main job was to retrieve prey. Mainly, they were used in water environments, thanks to their excellent swimming abilities. Nowadays, Labrador Retrievers are the most popular breed of dog in the United States. They are also one of the most popular breeds overall worldwide. But they are still classed as working dogs. Today they are used as guide dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs, and similar. They are incredibly intelligent and high-energy. They are also one of the best breeds for families, as they are playful, gentle, loyal, and very sociable. Crossbreeds just kinda happen naturally sometimes. Then people catch on and start breeding them on purpose. What does a Jackador look like? The appearance of the Jackador can vary from litter to litter. They are generally a small to medium breed but this could be anything between a big Jack Russell, or a small Labrador. Basically, they can inherit any of the traits from both parent breeds, and can end up looking more like one, the other, or a perfect in-between. So in general, the Jack Russell Terrier mix will weigh between 25 and 50 lbs. They will have a height of between 16 to 20 inches tall. Also, male Jackadors will be slightly bigger than their female counterparts. They have an athletic build, with proportionate legs. Their ears will most often be floppy, but could also be partially erect, as it depends. As for the coating, both Labradors and Jack Russels have water-resistant coats. So Jackadors will also inherit this. Jackadors are big fans of the water. They will enjoy swimming , plus excel at this skill. There will always be some Jackadors who might not like water. This will usually be down to them having had a bad experience with it at a young age. As for the color of the coating… Labradors are either black, white, yellow or chocolate. Jack Russell Terriers are brown and white. The Jackador will be a mix of all of this, and will usually inherit the coloring of the Labrador parent. Most often, Jackadors are either black, cream, or brown. Temperament and Behavior of the Jackador Every single dog has its own unique personality. Nobody can say otherwise. However, different breeds of dogs will have different temperaments and behavioral tendencies, due to the instincts and traits that have been bred in through their original purpose and design. When it comes to the Jackador, the temperament is a mixture of both Labrador and Jack Russell. It very much depends on the parents. So one of the first things you should do is ask about the parents of your prospective Jackador! Overall, both Labradors and Jack Russell Terriers are working dogs. So the Jack Russell Terrier mix is incredibly active and inherently wants to be of use. They need a lot of mental and physical stimulation. This then leads to destructive or disruptive behavior. As a crossbreed between two hunting dogs, Jackadors will also have very strong hunting instincts. This means they could inherently chase cats and other small animals and will see them as prey. A Labrador is less likely to chase cats compared with a Jack Russell who has a higher prey drive. With people, Jackadors are incredibly friendly and loyal. They love being around their family, and will not do very well when left alone for long periods of time. This is because they need to be with company, and not alone. But they are very loving and affectionate and great for families. The only other thing to watch out for in Jackadors, apart from the hunting instinct, is the barking. These dogs make themselves heard and will be prone to barking. So training from an early stage will be needed to manage this. Grooming Needs of a Jackador Both Jack Russell Terriers and Labradors have quite short hair, which is water-resistant and easy to maintain. As such, Jackador dogs are pretty easy to maintain grooming-wise and should be fine with being brushed once a week, and bathed only when needed. However, both parent breeds are big shedders during molting season, so the Jackador will be the same. When it comes to shedding season, there will be hairs everywhere, and brushing will have to be increased to every two days, or sometimes even every day. Other than that, there are no significant grooming needs to be aware of. Exercise Needs of a Jackador Both parent breeds are working dogs with a lot of energy…so yeah, the Jack Russell Terrier mix is equally as high-energy and active. They will need a lot of exercise. This means they will need at least two walks a day, and plenty of playtimes to get that energy out. Around 60 minutes a day or so should do the trick! Luckily, their small to medium size allows them to fit into apartments, so you can keep a Jackador within a regular home. However, it is preferable for them to have some sort of garden. There they can have plenty of space to burn through their energy. Otherwise, you will have to dedicate a lot more time and effort to exercising outside of the house. Jackador dogs also need plenty of mental stimulation. Consider mental challenges like: Puzzle toys Training sessions that challenge their abilities and learning. If they do not get enough mental stimulation, the Jack Russell Terrier mixed dog will get bored. And when bored, they can develop destructive behavior such as chewing and scratching furniture within the house. They will also try to get your attention by misbehaving. Are Jackadors Easy To Train? The Jackador is easiest to train when they are puppies. That training needs to be rigorous and consistent to be effective. Both dogs are intelligent. Training is a big part of caring for a dog. It is very important in order to establish appropriate behavioral patterns, basic commands, and to provide mental stimulation. But how easy is it to train a Jackador? Well, Labradors are one of the easiest dog breeds to train. They are incredibly intelligent and super eager to please and obey. They can be taught to do almost anything, which is why they are guide dogs. Jack Russell Terriers are equally intelligent. But they are quite independent and prefer to solve problems by themselves. This means that they can be a lot more stubborn and mischievous, and a more stern style of training is required. Jackador dogs are a mix of the two, and it mostly depends on which parent breed they take after. They will be very intelligent and energetic, and they will really enjoy training. However, you will need to be very consistent and stern, and start the training process as early as possible, in order to ensure it is effective. Apart from basic commands and behavioral patterns, training for a Jackador should focus on reducing the hunting instinct, and limiting the barking. The training should start as early as when they are a puppy, and socialization should be incorporated into the training from about 10 weeks of age. The Health of a Jackador Different dog breeds have higher risks for different specific health problems and issues, so this is something to look into beforehand. Crossbreeds, such as the Jack Russell Terrier mix, will inherit all of the health risks of both parent breeds. But the good news is that crossbreeds are a lot healthier overall, and the risk is significantly lower, as they do not tend to suffer from health issues as much. Nevertheless, you need to be aware of the main health problems of both the Labrador and the Jack Russell, so you know what to potentially look out for in your Jackador: The Health of a Labrador Ear infections: this can be easily prevented by regularly cleaning out the ears, and it is common in dogs with floppy ears. Heart diseases: the most common ones are chronic degenerative valve disease , cardiomyopathy , and heartworm disease. Progressive retinal atrophy: This is something that affects the retina of the eye, causing it to deteriorate over time and ultimately causing blindness. The Health of a Jack Russell Terrier Eye disorders: Jack Russell Terriers are usually prone to eye diseases such as glaucoma , lens luxation , and cataracts. Patellar luxation: this is pretty common amongst all small dogs. It occurs when the kneecap is not lined up properly, causing lameness. It will usually happen when they begin to get old. Legg-calve-Perthes disease: also common amongst small dogs, it is similar to hip dysplasia in that the ball of the hip joint is slightly deformed, causing arthritis and other problems. If you want to be able to know, in a more exact way, exactly which health risks are more significant in your Jackador, then the best way is to figure out the exact percentage of breeds in your puppy. Knowing if it is more Labrador or more Jack Russell will help you understand the health a lot better. And for this, you can simply take a DNA test, there are plenty available in the market, and you could also ask your vet for one. Food and Diet of a Jackador Figuring out the right diet for a crossbreed can be pretty challenging. This is especially true as Labradors and Jack Russell Terriers have very different diets, due to the difference in size. So you will instead have to figure out a unique diet plan that works for your Jackador, depending on which parent breed it takes after the most. It is worth noting that Jack Russell Terriers are prone to remaining athletic and fit all their life. But Labradors, on the other hand, can very easily become fat if given too much food! This is because Labs are missing the hormone that signals when their stomach is full. So make sure you give the right amount of food, and no more, and that it is high-quality and paired with plenty of exercise. So here is the important question: should you? Jackador dogs can be easily kept in a regular house or apartment, and they make excellent companions. Are you able to take good care of the Jackador, so that all needs are covered? If yes, then you can absolutely get one! If not, then try looking into a different breed of dog. To get a new Jackador puppy, you will have to find a reliable breeder, but these can be quite rare and can get pretty expensive as they are highly sought after. In all honesty, you will have a better chance of finding a Jackador if you look for one in shelters and adoption centers, where crossbreeds are a lot more popular. There are many online services that can help you look for a Jackador, and that will check different adoption centers and shelters automatically. Petfinder is one of the most popularly used and is very reliable. You can also check out this Labrador Russell Facebook page. Frequently Asked Questions How big will a Jackador get? Final Thoughts Labradoodles and The Great Hypoallergenic Debate Chances are you already know that Doodles, as a type of so-called designer dog, came about as a solution to the issue of pet allergies. Basically, many of the very best service animals are high shedders, which is a problem for those sensitive to the proteins found in dog saliva and carried by loose hair. While experts agree that no dog is ever completely hypoallergenic — all dogs shed to some extent, after all. The Poodle with its trademark curly hair coat is just about as close as you can come. Breeders have been modifying dogs for certain purposes in this way for generations. By finding just the right combination of working dog genes and low-shed ones, it was possible to develop the perfect service animals for those with allergies. Well, that all depends on the kind of coat they inherit… The Three Types of Labradoodle Coats The thing about Labradoodles is not only do they have two very distinct parent pups, but these parent pups also have widely varying coats. In fact, they are about as different as you can get. Doodle with a curly wool coat. Hair Coat Right at the other end of the canine spectrum, you have the Labrador Retriever straight-haired double coat. Naturally, this one is the highest shedding of the three although it has to be said that it is nowhere near as bad as the regular old Labrador Retriever type. Doodle with straight hair Fleece Coat Finally, your pal could end up with a coat that sits somewhere in between the two extremes. Wavy and single-layered, the fleece coat is likely the one that most people think of if they picture the Doodle. Rather than resembling one parent over the other, the dogs are distinctively Doodle, looking like gorgeous little teddy bear dogs. Doodle with wavy coat. The reason? As per the title of this article… Labradoodle coat change. The shedding of the puppy coat is a natural process that occurs in all dogs somewhere between the ages of six months and one year. This might come as a shock to newbie pet owners that are expecting to have adopted a low-shedding dog. However, the shedding of the puppy coat is pretty standard and in no way indicates that you will be dealing with a high-shedding Labradoodle for the rest of their days. At the end of the day, though, you should be prepared for your wool, hair, or fleece-coated Doodle to look quite different at the end of this transition. That being said, there are a few signs to look for in your puppy that could tell you what you might expect from their adult coat. So, here are the big two switch-ups you might expect to see in a Labradoodle coat change and how to anticipate the outcome of them: Labradoodle Coat Change: Type One possible way you might know ahead of time what kind of coat a Labradoodle puppy might have is to pay close attention to their generation. So, for instance, with Labradoodles, the breeder might combine a pedigree Labrador Retriever with a pedigree Poodle, and the resultant litter will be categorized as first-generation F1 Labradoodles. Determining the kind of coat each puppy in this litter might end with will be just about impossible. However, the breeder may also choose to pair a first-generation Labradoodle with a pedigree Poodle in the hopes of introducing more Poodle genes and making it more likely that the offspring will have a low shed coat. This is referred to as backcrossing, and the puppies are labeled F1B. Backcrossing one of these dogs with another Poodle creates an F1BB litter, and so on. So your first step in finding out about coat type is to chat to the breeder about the heritage of the puppies. Once the puppies are born, you might also start to see some further clues in the ways their original coat starts to develop. Furnishings the expert term for hair around the face, ears, tail, and legs are great for this. However, dogs destined for a curly or even just wavy mane will usually have quite pronounced hair at these locations, especially around their beard area and around their eyes. Labradoodle Coat Change: Color Up until now, the focus of this article has been heavily on Labradoodle coat change as per type. This seems to be a key consideration for most looking to potentially pick up a Doodle pup. However, a further way Labradoodle coat change may be seen is with regards to color. Oh no. Yet, it is this first change that will likely have the most significant impact here too. In that way, you can be sure to collect up most of the loose coat before it drops or gets tangled around the rest of the curls left forming tight, tricky knots that you may well need to end up cutting out. A decent slicker brush, such as the Chris Christensen Brush , which is designed to penetrate the coat fully, lifting and trapping loose hairs as it goes, will make your life easier. Find the Best Deal:. This coat is preferred by many. It should be wavy and forming light loose spirals. The Fleece coat has a distinctly soft, loopy spirals it feels like no other dog coat. This is a thicker tight curl coat. A Wool Fleece blend is a distinctly nice unusual coat as well. Has a cute fluffy longer coat look. Regular brushing is recommended. Minimal to non-shedding. The Multi-gene Australian Labradoodle always has the ultimate coat. Due to many years of breeding and the uniqueness of the Australian doodle produces a usually textured coat. It should be silky-soft waves and or light loopy spirals very nice Fleece coat and Fleece wool blend. As your Labradoodle puppy develops their adult coat and out of their puppy coat at about 6 to 12 months. Doodle coat will start to thicken and mat, this is the time to start grooming. When the pup coat is changing to their adult coat Puppy may lose a little hair and the coat may become lighten or darken. A change in curl or wavy will happen as the coat matures. Do NOT shave puppy coat off! In addition, we have our GorgeousDoodle preferences and tips as well : When your Doodle is about 14 months old they will have their adult coat and then body and legs can be shaved with clippers if needed. We usually only try to use the shavers on the tummy and sanitary areas but scissors cut everywhere else. It is important is to know your groomer or have a groomer that is recommended. Ask to see photos of other Doodles they have groomed, etc. The best shampoos and conditioners are super important…Doodles have sensitive skin. It is always important to leave their coat longer on the head, face, and tail. It looks good if the tail is full and top of the head is full and ears are trimmed up. I always talk with the groomer and give them firm instructions. No shaving the face or ears or paws or tail. We groom our dogs ourselves. We sometimes leave the legs a little longer with poodles it is called leaving the pants on and or leave their paws and ankles with a bit longer coat. It can be fun to give them a whole new look with a little different cut. Buy wide-tooth combs and open wirer brush and the scissors with a round tip. It is a fun coat, that you can leave long and just carefully trim around faces. Take to a groomer and you can have a full groom cut down to an inch or two or whatever you want. It is a good idea in Summer season hot weather to give them a full short body and legs cut. We would love to see photos of before and after the grooming of your Doodle. Another good soap is Dr. And some mild cream rinse. Bath 3 to 5 weeks or only when needed. Here are some pictures of our favorite high moisture great smelling shampoos and conditioners, very mild!! Most Labradoodles love water and are pretty easy to bathe or take swimming. Bath and cream rinse after swimming. The coat is one of the unique features of this Breed and sets it apart from any other breeds. Australian Labradoodles have no body odor, they do not require constant bathing and brushing, which is great for all types of owners. Is highly possible that the non- fur fleece and wool textures coat of the Australian Labradoodle is less likely to cause any pet allergic reactions. Labradoodles will have some very low hair breakage loss. Just like humans can have low hair loss. But that is not shedding. See lots of fun photos and videos of our GorgeousDoodles families on our Pics and Vids page , and on our YouTube and Facebook accounts! As you might have guessed, this dog is a cross between poodle and Labrador parents — and the result is an adorable bundle of joy with a sweet, gentle personality. Labradoodle puppy coats come in a range of colors and textures, so labradoodle owners are spoiled for choice when choosing their fur baby. Read on to discover more about Labradoodles and labradoodle coat types. What Are Hypoallergenic Dog Coats? Hypoallergenic dogs have less of a thick coat than many other breeds. A highly shedding coat presents a higher risk to allergy sufferers than non-shedding dogs like a labradoodle puppy. As a dog with one of the most allergy-friendly coats , there are a few practicalities to keep in mind when it comes to your labradoodle pooch and its coat. Pretty much every labradoodle puppy goes through a coat change, which is separate from a shedding coat. The puppy coat is eventually replaced by an adult coat, which comes with more grooming requirements. Types of Labradoodle Puppy Coats One of the best things about labradoodle dogs is the wide range of choices with regard to appearance. Wool Coat You can determine if your Labradoodle puppy has a fleece coat. You can identify fleece coats by the way the fur sits between the eyes, as this area starts to get curly first. This is the curliest coat type, but it still comes in a variety of types. Some dogs with a curly coat have a cotton-type coat, which is the softest but also incredibly high maintenance. Labradoodle puppies with wool Labradoodle puppy coats are mainly non-shedding and can make great companions for pet owners with allergies. Fleece Coat Doodles with a fleece coat require a little less maintenance than the other types of doodles, but they still need weekly brushing and plenty of TLC. A fleece-coated labradoodle is the result of combining a curly wool coat gene with the gene for a straight coat. Areas such as the ears and collar are particularly prone to getting matted, so be sure to pay close attention to these areas when you brush your fleece-coated labradoodle once or twice per week. Hair Coat A labradoodle with a straight coat has inherited most of its fur genes from its Labrador retriever parent. Something interesting about Labradoodles is that their Labradoodle puppy coats change as they get older, so your hair-coated labradoodle might get a wave to its fur as it gets older. While you can also take it to a professional groomer on a weekly basis, this can incur hefty grooming costs. Most labradoodle owners opt to take their dog to a groomer once a month or two and do regular adult coat maintenance themselves. Use the correct type of dog brush and be sure to get all the way down to the skin. Give your dog a brush before and after bath time. All puppies eventually lose their puppy coat to make way for their adult coat, this goes the same with Labradoodle puppy coats. You might find the new type of coat is totally different from the old coat. Coats and Generational Differences The amount of hair your dog sheds varies between puppies, but generational differences can also play a role. First-generation doodles shed slightly more than second-generation doodles, with multigenerational Labradoodles shedding even less. We genetically test each breeding parent to make sure the shedding genes are not passed on to the puppies in our training program. We adore the breed and have a wide range of Labradoodle puppies for sale to choose from, with different color and type of Labradoodle puppy coats. We can even deliver a fully trained doodle puppy direct to your door if you like! Labradoodle Puppy -Will a Labradoodle be easy to look after? Karen has been grooming Labradoodles since she introduced the first litter of doodle puppies in BC Australian Labradoodle with a fine wool coat, Lexi The Labradoodle Wool Coat The coats are identified by their feel rather than their look. The wool coat is one that I love because I live with severe allergies and asthma. This coat is most like a poodle coat and although the wool coats of our dogs are very soft they feel like poodle coats and are very curly. These coats absolutely do not shed. Even during the change from puppy coat to adult coat they shed very little. Our Aussi has a curly wool coat. He is clipped so that he can lead his very active life style. Lilyanna has an unusually soft curly wool coat that waves when it is long. The Labradoodle Wool Coat The coats are identified by their feel rather than their look. The Labradoodle Fleece Coat The fleece coat is wavy rather than tightly curled. It is a very desirable coat because it is slightly easier to look after than the wool coat and it has a lovely silken feel. Although we have not had a shedding fleece dog there is the possibility of some light shedding when they change from a puppy to adult coat. The fleece coat does need to be brushed but it is much more easily kept long than a wool coat. The puppy and adult dog will need regular grooming because the face will need trimming as will the bum and beneath the ears to prevent matting. Somewhere between nine and fourteen months of age the adult coat will grow in. At this transition time the coat will need lots of attention in order to keep the length. Brush right to the skin with a stiff brush or rake. If the dog mats at this point she will have to clipped short by your groomer. Hair Coat The hair coat feels very similar to the hair on your head. It is unlike the feel of wool or fleece. The hair coat will shed. It requires little attention. Puppies will often look like they are going to have a fleece coat until the hair comes through the puppy coat at about eight or nine weeks of age. The doodle with a hair coat has the same wonderful temperament and personality as the doodle with the non shedding coat but is not good for a person with allergies or for a family that has chosen the doodle because of his non-shedding qualities. It is hard to get a brush through the curls if you leave it too long. Without this regular brushing right down to the skin mats will form next to the skin. Mats make it very uncomfortable for the dog to walk and run and play. We keep our wool coated dogs clipped short because we live with fields of weeds and burrs. It is quite possible to keep a wool coated dog with a long coat, it simply is a matter of keeping up with the brushing and keeping feet, faces and bums clipped. This would be a trip to the groomer at least every second month. Every six weeks keeps dogs in both long and short coats looking and feeling like movie stars. Grooming For Every Doodle No matter what the doodle coat there is grooming required. This can either be done by an interested family member or your groomer. Ears Fur grows out of the ears of a labradoodle. It begins its journey deep in the ear canal. If ears are not keep clean and dry dirt and wax can lead to severe ear infections. You can tell when the doggie has hot ears that there is a problem and a trip to the vet will be in order. Some doodles love to dig and have very thick fur in their ears. This means it could be a good idea to pluck the fur from deep in the ear. It is not difficult to take tweezers or better still a hemostat and pluck out the fur on a regular basis. I must say I almost swooned the first time I did it myself but it does get easier. Unless you are an expert it is a two person job, one to hold the dog and promise treats, the other to pluck. Your vet can recommend an ear drying powder which will keep the ears in good health. Of course, your groomer will do the ear plucking for you. If you take your dog every six weeks she should be fine. Nails Unless dogs travel on a stone river bed a couple of kilometers every single day they need their nails trimmed. Our Labradoodles have dew claws and they will always need attention. Nail trimming should be done every few weeks. It is however another wonderful thing your professional groomer will do. Our doodle girls have fuzzy feet and so have to be content with a simple nail trim. Little Bottoms All long coated dogs need a trim around their little bottoms for ease of toilette. He is enjoying his new summer doo as he loves water sports. This boy always stops to smell the roses or dandelions. Contact Us. A Labradoodle puppy! Partly thanks to that gorgeous fluffy coat. When do Labradoodles Lose their Puppy Coat? It is quite a gradual process. The process typically starts around 6 months of age. But, it can take up to a year and a half to complete. This may not be great news if you or someone else in your family suffers from dog allergies. But, as long as your Labradoodle grows up to have a fleece or wool coat, you will have less shed fur to clean once the puppy coat has fully shed and the adult coat grows in. What is a Labradoodle Puppy Coat Like? The Labradoodle puppy coat is a lot different to all adult varieties. Puppy coats are always single layer. Are Labradoodle Puppy Coats Hypoallergenic? After their creation, the resulting demand for an allergy-friendly dog catapulted Labradoodles to worldwide fame. It also led to the development of many other hybrid dog breeds. The truth is, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. So, Labradoodle puppy coats cannot be hypoallergenic. So, your Labradoodle puppy coat will not catch any falling dander. Allergens could still find their way onto other objects in your home. And, their shedding puppy coats could aggravate your allergies. Adult Labradoodles can have one of three coat types: Hair coat — will shed moderately all year, and heavily during shedding seasons Fleece coat — will shed lightly to moderately, varies from one Doodle to the next Wool coat — does not shed visibly, but hair sheds into the surrounding coat, which can cause painful knots if not groomed properly Influence from Parent Breeds Labradoodles come from a long line of working dogs; primarily the Labrador Retriever and the Standard Poodle. Labrador Retrievers typically have a double coat. Their fur has an insulating under-layer and a protective outer-layer which helps them in their working roles. The Poodle, on the other hand, is one of the rare working breeds with a single layer coat. Are Adult Labradoodle Coats Hypoallergenic? The fleece type of adult Labradoodle coat will often be best for individuals that suffer from allergies. But, this will still need regular grooming to control shedding dander. And, regardless of which adult coat your Doodle has, your dog will still need to shed out their puppy coat first. Suddenly, you will find tufts and clumps of shed dog hair everywhere, where before there was none. This can start as early as six months. So, watch out for shed fur from this age. It could start anywhere from six to nine months, or even slightly outside of this range. The puppy coat has to be completely shed out to allow the adult coat to grow in. That would leave your Labradoodle defenseless against pests, the elements, and injury. Instead, their coat will shed in stages, over time. This is why it can take up to a year and a half for the puppy coat to fully shed out and the adult coat to fully grow in. Depending on the adult coat your Labradoodle inherits, these hairs may be long and straight hair coat , long and loosely curly fleece coat , or short and tightly curled wool coat. In most cases, a Labradoodle will have fully lost their puppy coat and grown into their adult one between the ages of 12 and 15 months. But, there is no exact timer that buzzes the moment this process is finished. But, some veterinarians may be happy for you to cut it short with scissors, to keep your cleaning schedule for shed fur a little more manageable. Not only will this help you to gather and remove shed fur before it goes all over your floor, but it will also familiarise your Labradoodle with the grooming process. All three types of adult Labradoodle coat require regular grooming. Are you dealing with a shedding puppy coat right now? We would love to hear about your experiences with the Labradoodle puppy coat in the comments. Related Articles. Also, your fleece coats, while, overall, are softer than your wool coats in texture, still have some texture variation within the fleece coat type. The Australian Labradoodle requires varying degrees of grooming depending on their coat type. A light trimming might be required with scissors but usually not. However, we do not have any hair coat in Sunset Hills, because our puppies are all multi-gen. This coat usually requires trimming once or twice a year. This coat also requires trimming about three-four times a year. All allergy and asthma friendly labradoodles have a coat change from puppy to adult usually between months of age. During their coat change, it is recommended that you groom them daily. The coat change can last anywhere from a week to several weeks. This is usually the time when owners decide that their beautiful furry doodle needs a shorter look. Note: Not all Labradoodles are Allergy and Asthma friendly. We do recommend that if you have the opportunity to meet one of these wonderful dogs in person that you should check to see if you have any reactions before you make your decision in purchasing your new puppy. We recommend that any family or person who suffers from dog related severe allergies or asthma should look into a Wool coated labradoodle as they have the highest success rate. This breed likes to chew and should be supplied with plenty of toys and bones. Nylabones and rubber Kong toys are highly recommended. Rawhides, soft rubber and stuffed toys are unsafe, for they are easily shredded or swallowed whole. Olde English Bulldogges are so eager to please that they may overexert themselves in an effort to do whatever is asked of them. An owner who displays a natural authority toward the dog, socialization and obedience training are important. It is best to channel high energy individuals to some type of work and exercise. The objective in training this dog is to achieve pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in its pack. When we humans live with dogs , we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because a dog communicates his displeasure with growling and eventually biting, all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. The humans must be the ones making the decisions, not the dogs. That is the only way your relationship with your dog can be a complete success. This breed tends to drool and slobber. Height, Weight Height: Males 17 - 20 inches 43 - 51 cm Females 16 - 19 inches 40 - 48 kg Weight: Males 60 - 80 pounds 27 - 36 kg Females 50 - 70 pounds 22 - 31 kg Health Problems May be susceptible to bloat —a painful and often fatal condition that can be brought on by too large a quantity of food consumed at one time. As with all large breeds, hip dysplasia sometimes occurs. Breeders are working hard to keep it out of the Olde English Bulldogge; therefore, no dog with bad hips is bred. Living Conditions Olde English Bulldogges will adapt to almost any lifestyle. They should be protected from the extreme cold and heat, although they are not as susceptible as the AKC Bulldog. Exercise This breed needs to be taken on a daily pack walk to satisfy its migration instinct. When properly conditioned they can be active dogs, however, they are equally happy with moderate exercise. They can stay in relatively good shape with good muscle tone with only light exercise. These dogs are naturally slow, and because of their unique structure, they should not be encouraged to jump or engage in strenuous exercise as young pups. This breed is an average shedder. In he became disenchanted with English Bulldogs due to their breeding and breathing problems. It is a breed of dog with the good temperament of a contemporary English Bulldog and the good looks of a Bulldog from the 18th century. Is this adorable dog the right fit for your household? Let's find out! Here you will find out every bit of information about Olde English Bulldogges that you need to consider before committing to caring for one! The original Olde English Bulldogge is already extinct. Many people's mental image of a bulldog is of an Old English Bulldog of more recent vintage; unfortunately, the Old English Bulldog has been wiped out. The original, now-extinct Old English Bulldog was an athletic, agile bull-baiting breed that inspired the modern English Bulldog. The modern Olde English Bulldogge was intentionally given a name that sets it apart from the English Bulldog. The Olde English Bulldogge of today is a modern update on the breed that originated in the 17th century. These breeds were used carefully to bring about the desired characteristics and demeanor. They have fewer identified health issues compared to other bulldog breeds. Compared to other brachycephalics or short-muzzled breeds, they have excellent temperaments and a lower risk for common health problems in other brachycephalic dogs. They are more physically capable, resilient, and robust. The negative bulldog traits in other breeds are less prevalent in this breed. They have fewer airway issues, hip issues, climate sensitivity-related problems, and many more. While this breed is prone to a few serious diseases, many other problems they face could be prevented with proper care and attention. Being brachycephalic, they have a more difficult time breathing than other dogs. They need to be watched closely to ensure they don't overdo it because of this. They are particularly vulnerable to heat exhaustion during the summer months. They are also genetically predisposed to a wide variety of skin disorders. They risk irritation and infection if you neglect to clean the creases around their face. There are high costs involved with breeding including health-testing for the parents to show they are in good condition to breed, high medical costs for birthing, whelping, and raising the puppies once they are born. Another reason that they are so expensive is that it takes years of selective breeding to get a good quality toy poodle that meets the ideal breed standard. This is a question that many people have on their minds when they are thinking of buying a toy poodle. Here are some general differences between male and female Toy Poodles. But once trained they can be steady and protective of the family. If you have small children, male Toy Poodles may not be the best choice. Unlike female dogs, males tend to lack parental instinct. This can be a problem if they are around young children as they can be boisterous and play too roughly. Temperament-wise, male Toy Poodles tend to be more affectionate and crave lots of attention. This can make them noisier because they will constantly whine and bark to get your attention. If the male dog is not neutered, you can expect it to be more aggressive especially if there are female dogs in heat around. To prevent him from running away, you need to make sure he is always on a leash and securely fenced. Female Toy Poodles Pros and Cons Female Toy Poodles are typically more independent and mature more quickly, which makes them easier to train. They are also better with young children since they have more parental instincts than males. They tend to view young children as strangely shaped puppies that need to be taken care of and thus are more likely to behave in a protective and nurturing manner. One thing that you need to watch out for with female Poodles is when they are in heat. Your female dog will normally be in a season twice a year but the problem is that during this time they will bleed which can be very messy and hard to clean up, so you need to keep her outside or somewhere that you can easily clean. Golden retrievers are such great family dogs. And they tend to have some behavior problems because of their great characteristics. Most goldens want to be near their people. And they love to be petted and get attention. They may jump, grab our hand or arm, or engage in some destructive behaviors. Many of these are normal dog behaviors that can be modified through training and exercise. Normal Dog Behaviors Versus Abnormal Behaviors Dogs naturally dig, bark, express fear in certain situations, mark territory, chase small animals, and jump. They may steal food. Or want to be with us all the time. Goldens were bred to be sociable, high-energy dogs. My rescued golden Spencer almost always had to carry something in his mouth. So I made sure there were safe toys for him to happily tote around. Unfortunately, many dogs are given up to shelters because of behaviors that can be modified. To have a great companion takes a lot of work, patience, and time. And to meet those needs. These should be dealt with by behavior specialists who can evaluate the individual dog and determine the best behavior modification plan. These abnormal behaviors include aggression to those around the dog, obsessive-compulsive disorders, shutting down, and severe separation anxiety. Why Behavior Problems Develop There is no one reason why some behavior problems occur. Unfortunately, goldens are so popular—the third-popular breed ranked by the American Kennel Club—they are often poorly bred. There are too many back-yard and puppy mill dogs who are more likely to not be the examples of what the breed should be. Jumping on People Golden retrievers usually love everyone and never met a stranger. Goldens are the greeting committee of the dog world. Many dogs want to jump on people when greeting them. The golden can, of course, unintentionally injure someone, knocking them over in his exuberant greeting. Engaging in Destructive Behavior In addition to friendliness, goldens were bred to hunt. They have energy to spare. And they were bred to retrieve and have something in their mouths. They may dig up the garden. Or chew up our furniture. Or they may steal the food on the counter. And the food they eat may be toxic, such as chocolate or raisins. Or they may get a blockage from ingesting a towel or sock. A bored, under-exercised golden can get very creative in meeting his needs. They often need to have something in their mouths. That is, he may constantly try to hold our clothes, arm, or hand in his mouth. Biting is a natural canine behavior. But puppies should be taught bite-inhibition. And it can be dangerous. Someone can be badly bruised or even pulled down. Pulling on the Leash Goldens love to go places and greet all their new admirers. But they want to get there sooner rather than later. Many dogs pull on a leash, but not all are as friendly as goldens are known to be. And they can be lazer-focused on getting where they want to go. Being a rather large dog, a golden pulling on a leash can injure someone. An owner can be pulled down and get injured. Or the dog himself can get free and get lost or injured—or worse. Demanding Attention Because of their natural friendliness, goldens may want to be the center of attention. They are so family-oriented, they love to be with us. Some goldens may bark at you for attention. They may nudge you and grab your arm to be recognized. Some may even engage in unwanted behaviors like taking something off the table. Even negative attention is attention. Hyperactivity Some goldens seemingly bounce off the walls. They are like a hurricane passing through the living room. Tables are cleared of bric a brac. Pillows are shredded and on the floor. But your happy golden is furiously wagging his tail, looking for the next item he can use to help expel his excess energy. Separation Anxiety Because of their innate friendly, family-oriented behavior, goldens may suffer from separation anxiety at a higher rate than some other breeds. Their need to be with us can lead to some unwanted behaviors. Dogs with mild separation anxiety may drool, pace, whine, and generally behave in a distressed manner. Dogs with severe separation anxiety may become very destructive. They may try to get out of doors and windows, feverishly digging at door and window frames. They may even severely harm themselves in their attempts to get free. Dogs with separation anxiety may need professional behavioral help. We owe it to our goldens to do all that we can do to meet their natural needs. A bored, untrained, under-exercised, unsupervised golden is going to develop some problem behaviors. Some of the tips below will even help your golden from developing any of the potential problems cited above. I wrote the ways to help fix a problem separately from the problems because it will probably take more than one item to successfully change an unwanted behavior. All of the favorable interactions we have with our goldens also help further our bond with them. Physical Exercise Goldens were bred to hunt. They are highly-energetic dogs. Walks, fetching, jogging, agility, and swimming can all be great ways to physically exercise your golden. A vet check-up is advisable prior to starting any exercise program. Physical exercise can help decrease or eliminate the above-named problems. Of course, you want to exercise your dog enough but not over-tire them. Dogs who have been sufficiently exercised are less likely to jump or engage in destructive activities such as digging or chewing. Also, dogs who are exercised and calm before we leave are less likely to develop separation anxiety. Obedience Training Obedience training helps us communicate with our dogs and informs them what behaviors are desired. So we can teach them to sit before they receive attention. Or to lie down next to us and settle. And we can show him what toys he can put in his mouth rather than destroying items or turning us into his chew toy. Redirection works. And we can teach them to not pull on a leash and to walk on a loose leash. Part of the training should include how to leave your dog alone. This will help prevent separation anxiety from developing. Start with short sessions. Make leaving a happy opportunity—when great things appear. Leave a frozen, stuffed Extreme Kong with him as you leave. If your dog has already shown signs of separation distress, get the help of a qualified behavior specialists. As far as your golden inappropriately seeking attention is concerned, you can ignore your dog. Turn away or get up and leave. But do give him the attention he needs on your terms by calling him over to you occasionally. Pet him. Have him do a command or trick. Praise, pet, and treat. You should also play games with him. Teach him to tug a toy like a rope or long fleece to and give. You can have him play fetch. You can play hide-and-seek where you go and hide and call him to you. Make a big deal when he reaches you YES! Good boy! And not at all with a dog who has separation anxiety. But, to goldens, this is what they often enjoy most. Everyone is a potential friend. Goldens will thrive if they are fed the same times each day, are exercised as needed routinely, and receive attention from their people every day. No dog should be just put aside like a statue. Goldens especially need attention through positive daily interactions—play, training, exercise. If ignored, their sweet, golden personality will wilt. Final Thoughts Golden retrievers are such happy, affable, family dogs. But they are prone more than some breeds to certain problem behaviors because of their genetic purpose to retrieve and their desire to be with people. By doing so, their lives—as well as ours—will be full and happy. Does your golden engage in any unwanted behaviors? How have you handled them? Please tell us about it in the comment section below. What you need is to scour every resource you have regarding the stages of labor and you should also determine the complications if something uneventful might happen. Given the fact that each canine breed has its own vulnerabilities and complications. Also, each dog has its own unique whelping and birthing process, so embraced the unexpected. Above all, the ultimate keyword you should know is preparedness as they are essential in delivering the litters safely and with ease. This is one of the best ways to prepare your golden retriever for labor and delivery. Gestation Period Generally, an all-female dog breed has a gestation that lasts up to 63 days. Determining the exact delivery time is still difficult find out. But the usual time frame of delivery is usually between 58 to 70 days. Although your local veterinarian can help you narrow the time frame by examining the female dog. Also, be aware the there are still chances that your female dog is not pregnant but feeling pregnant. This phenomenon is known as pseudocyesis or false pregnancy. If your dog has an improper diet, there can be complications and discomfort while on her pregnancy period. There are some things you should remember while your golden retriever is in the labor and delivery process. Some Tips: Never give them treats or scraps — Your goal is to feed your pregnant golden retriever highly nutritious food on a regular basis. Again, stick to the suggested regular adult food. Give him plenty of water — Make sure that your female dog has enough water. Check the water bowl very often. You need to keep them hydrated at all times. Feed your dog only small meals instead of bulky meals — The reason behind this is your pregnant dog has already full in the abdomen. Feeding her large meals will only create discomfort which can eventually lead to complications if you keep on feeding her in large amounts of meals. Feed them high-quality kibble food — Investing in premium quality and wholesome kibble food is a perfect meal for your pregnant golden retriever. The fact that high-quality kibble food has more quality ingredients and jam packed with nutrients and vitamins that your dog needs. Giving them low-quality kibble food is like putting them in danger. You should be wary of their diet and also watch out for any dog food that has GMOs, preservatives, synthetic ingredients, meat by-products, and fillers. Golden Retriever Labor and Delivery As your pregnant golden retriever nearing its labor and delivery, you are going to need to monitor her at all times and watch for changes. Check the body temperature at least twice as this can help you notify its impending birth. A day before the labor, your female dog will have a drop in her body temperature which is a sign of near birth. The normal temperature should be to .And prior to the labor which is 24 hours , the temperature may drop 98 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit. In that case, be prepared. Stage One of Labor The moment the temperature drops, the labor is expected to happen anytime soon. Your dog might feel lethargic and anxious. This will be followed by a nesting behavior. While your dog is in its nesting behavior, this is the time to put her in the whelping box you should train her to get accustomed to the whelping box beforehand. In some cases, they will try to drag some piece of fabric or pieces of clothing into her whelping box. The initial stage will normally last 6 to 12 hours. Stage Two of Labor Moving on, this next stage is the right moment where the puppy is going to be delivered. There begin visible contractions. The female dog feels the strain. The first puppy is about to deliver in 1 to 2 hours prior to the straining and contractions of the female golden retriever. If you cant handle it properly, you can call your vet for assistance and for a care delivery process. After the delivery, the female dog may enter into her resting phase which lasts up to 5 hours. If there are expected puppies, active strains continue to persist and will begin again. You should know the estimated puppies by having your female dog take an ultrasound early on, so you are aware of the golden retriever labor and delivery are finished. Although some female dogs will not have their resting phase. Because in some cases puppies are rapidly delivered. Stage Three of Labor After the puppy is born, the female dog will enter stage three of labor. This stage is where the placenta is being delivered which normally occurs between 6 to 15 minutes after the delivery of the puppy. After the delivery, the mother dog will enter stage two of labor again. It will depend if the mother dog will continue in contraction or will continue her resting phase. The stage of 2 and 3 labors will continue if there are still puppies in the mother dog. You should watch out for the number of placentas. The number of placentas should tally with the number of puppies. Finally, the Whelping Stage By the time all the puppies are delivered, the female golden retriever will immediately clean the puppy. This process is removing the amniotic sac if still present and she will also chew the umbilical cord. After this, you will eventually hear the puppies crying. You can assist and nurse the newborn puppies in order to help the mother if need be. But keep in mind, no more heavy exercise for them, they should be given light physical activities only. Have them walk with you with a maximum of five short walks within a day. Your pregnant dog should be well-rested for the last 2 to 3 weeks prior to her delivery. Because the last weeks are going to be essential for the health of the puppies and the mother also. There will be complications or worse, puppies could die if the mother gets hit too hard or bumped somewhere on the abdomen part. That said, make sure that you consult with your vet before giving any treatment or any sort of medication. Because these can pass down to her unborn puppies. But be sure to talk with your vet all about it. That said, the vet is able to detect ant physical abnormalities, infections, or even diseases with the puppies. You should also ask some questions regarding the golden retriever labor and delivery. Because you will never know if the delivery will be safe or a complication will happen. There could be bleeding in her vagina before birth. Important Nutrients for Pregnant Golden Retrievers When feeding your pregnant golden retriever, you should consider several factors. Maybe right now, you are feeding your dog a cheap kibble food with low nutritional value and full of fillers and other synthetic components that can be dangerous to your dog. Vitamins Vitamins are obviously crucial to anyone and that includes that pregnant dog. There are fruits and vegetables and even organ meats that contain one of these vitamins. Also, vitamin D aids calcium absorption. Canned mackerel dairy products and eggs; and salmon are high sources of vitamin D. In addition, you should also include folate. Because folate is essential in preventing any multiple birth defects. Sources of high folate include liver, poultry, and pork. Just be careful of the amount of liver you are giving. Medium-sized dogs eat more than mg of vitamin A on a daily basis. Minerals Iron, calcium, phosphorous are important to every dog including pregnant ones. Calcium is great for the development of bone and tooth, and calcium is crucial especially during the nursing period. Meaty bones are high sources of calcium although you should keep your pregnant dog from eating dog bones after 7 weeks of labor because it might lead to problems in health. Phosphorous aids the development of bones in puppies, it can also prevent any bone health problems in female dogs. Fish and eggs are great sources of phosphorous. Iron helps fights anemia which is fairly common in dog pregnancy. The best sources of iron are organ meats, liver, kidneys, and beef heart. So you need to focus on this essential meat. There are premium kibble products that offer a large protein diet that is cital in your pregnant dog. Fatty Acids Great sources of omega 3 fatty acids came from fish like wild-caught salmon. You can also give some fish oil dog supplements in order to aid the overall health of your female dog. They are also beneficial in aiding the nerves, fetal brain, and also eyesight. Instead, you should be hygienic given the fact that the puppies are susceptible to any kind of disease. Hydrogen peroxide Towels paper towels, washcloths, and blankets Antibacterial gel ointment. But her pregnancy turned to be false. The tests were negative and I was very disappointed. As to Katya the test proved to be correct, but Gerda born 9 puppies. I believe that a dog must be shown to the doctor who will take delivery a week before it. I do not doubt that only an experienced and competent person can take delivery. Surely you should pay for it. But I know many cases when presumption has led to the dramatic and even tragic consequences. I always invite a doctor and never have regretted about it. Long ago I have made a list of necessary things which must be prepared beforehand so that I would not be obliged to dash around the house in the last moment. It can be disposable or dismountable. How to construct a dismountable box see Garbank-Lislone Kennel site. And the box itself can be larger or smaller. The only important characteristic that a bitch can lie stretched there and can easily penetrate into it. As concerning me I use very high and spacious box made of a wardrobe. Flap door is made in one of the walls so that mother-dog could easily enter but puppets could not leave the box. It should be convenient to clean the box. Underlying cloth should be easily removed, it must be absorbing and not slippery. The new-born puppies from the very first moments of their life try to crawl and need lugs for their paws. You should prepare a considerable number of underlying cloths so that you can change them regularly to keep the nest clean. As concerning me I hate newspapers, oil-cloths and bed-sheets. On the newspapers the puppets turn black , on the oil-cloths — wet, bed-sheets are always gone awry. I prefer underlying cloths of "dry bed" type, pique bed-spreads or heavy terry sheets. Gerda prepares a hole Gerda each time prepared a hole for delivery. Having felt that she is pregnant she chose the place and during each walk dug earth and made the hole comfortable. With lightning speed she relieves herself and rushes back to her children. Usually obedient and delicate she hauls back with such a force that literally pulls down. Even to feed her becomes a problem — she brings to the puppies every tasty bit even when they already begin to receive additional food. Mikimoto digging two holes. We have rather spacious bathroom, and it becomes a puppies room. It is very inconvenient choice but she insisted on it. So we had to put a box in the chair and she gave birth beside it. On the towels still holding a toy in her teeth and licking all over every puppy in the armchair permanganic acid amiflayn The house should be clean. Newborn puppies need warmth. At one instance my Katya as a really romantic character gave birth by candle-light. This model of a flashlight is the most convenient as the hands stay free Prepare medical oil-cloth, disposable diapers and paper towels and napkins. Put an oil-cloth on the bed, sofa or armchair where your dog likes to lie down. Above it put a diaper, bed-sheet or a big towel. I think that if a dog wants to give birth on a sofa let her do it, because she must feel herself comfortable. But if you do not protect it it can be ruined for good after the delivery. Prepare towels and clean rags to dry the puppies. Already washed terry and ordinary towels are best of all. They are relatively stiff and perfectly absorb moisture. Drying a puppy you simultaneously give him a massage Prepare a garbage basket, a pail with pink permanganic acid solution, a broom, dust-pan and rags for cleaning the floor You should have at hand threads and scissors. The threads must be thick, approximately of the 10th number. Some owners believe that a bitch must gnaw through an umbilical cord herself and eat several placentae. Besides not all of them are accurate, some bitches become so nervous that can leave the umbilical cord shorter than necessary. As a rule a puppy is born in a bladder which must be quickly and accurately removed. Placenta usually is born together with a puppy. And leave 1 cm of umbilical cord from the place of cutting. Put a towel or a soft bed-cover into it, put inside hot-water bottles and switch on a lamp. Electronic one is more convenient Several syringes very dangerous in incompetent hands! Write down all telephone numbers which you may need Find a tray where all instruments and other articles can be placed. Golden Retriever puppies are fluffy balls of joy, and you must be thrilled to welcome them into your home. But how many puppies should you be expecting from this upcoming litter? On average, Golden Retrievers can have around eight puppies. Litter sizes can vary depending on the breed of dog, so there are a few factors that can determine the litter size of your Golden Retriever. This article goes over what kind of litter you could be expecting based on your Golden Retriever mother. Litter Size: First-Time vs. This is the national average for first-time mothers, so it is normal for your dog to give birth to a few less or a few more. However, it is always important for her to have check-ups with a vet to ensure everything is going well with her puppies. It is very rare that your Goldie will have a single puppy birth. Litter sizes of over a dozen puppies are also possible with Golden Retrievers, but not as common. If your Golden Retriever is pregnant, it is safe to assume that she will give birth to four to nine puppies. While it is always important to feed your dog a healthy and balanced diet, pregnant dogs need high-quality vitamins and minerals and premium protein. Dog food that is filled with additives and fillers can affect the litter size. Diet will also be a factor in how healthy the puppies will be after birth and what their survival rate will be. Health: If your Golden Retriever is obese or not given enough exercise, this can affect the litter. An unhealthy Goldie will more than likely produce a small litter. The puppies might also be born weak and have a smaller chance of survival. Age of both parents. You do not want to breed your female Golden Retriever too young or too old. The age range for the female to be bred is 2 to 5 years old. However, if you wait to breed your Goldie for the first time after they are five years old, their litters will always be smaller in number. The age of the male is also a factor. The sperm count in males will decrease once they reach 5 years old. Genetics: Dogs that have a more diverse gene pool are more likely to have larger litters than dogs that have been overly inbred. This is why if you go to a breeder, ask them about the parents and if they have been tested for defects. Image Credit: PorChonlawit, Shutterstock Final Considerations If you are a dog owner, you already know how important health, diet, and exercise are for raising a strong and happy dog. These factors must also be considered when deciding if you want to breed your Golden Retriever. Have her checked with the vet before she gets pregnant to make sure she is healthy and able to carry a litter safely. Ensure the potential mate is also healthy and the right age. However, no matter the litter size, each puppy will be a bundle of pure joy! A Canadian expat, Nicole now lives on a lush forest property with her Kiwi husband and new baby daughter in New Zealand. Less physical activity — Nothing noticeable with Raven. Hungry, hungry, hungry! More affection please — One word: Golden Retriever. Behavior changes — Nothing noticeable here with Raven. Vaginal discharge — She keeps pretty tidy in her nether regions, but in hindsight, I do recall her licking herself more frequently than normal. Bigger Nipples — This time around I started noticing an increase in the size of her nipples around halfway through. Maybe after about 5 weeks? Not until towards the end of the second trimester have we noticed signs that Raven is pregnant. More pee-pee! Belly starts to pooch — Yep! This is probably one of the first things I notice that confirms pregnancy. I mention this again below. Every breed and dog will be different. By the time she gives birth, we also start adding a powdered probiotic to her meals which we noticed has helped her with digestion when taking care of her litter. This gives us a rough idea of when she will begin labor. Antsy, restless, pacing, panting, digging, nesting… — Yes, yes, yes! We both Raven and I usually have a few restless nights before the puppies arrive. Check out the AKC website for more information about dog pregnancy and gestation periods. Our Golden Retriever was pregnant for 63 days plus or minus a day or two After she had her first puppy? Just Kidding… Raven was bred on March 1st, .The real question is when did Raven show clear signs that she was pregnant. Pregnancy 2 — It was around 3 weeks out that I was fairly confident Raven was pregnant. I noticed 3 signs. First, her stomach was big enough that she was showing. Second, her nipples were much larger than normal. Pregnancy 3 — Very similar to pregnancy 2 — This time I really noticed the enlarged nipples and her fur flaring from the side of her body. The last thing I noticed was her bulging belly. All 3 signs became apparent around 4 weeks out. Also, you can get an ultrasound, blood test, or have your vet check your dog to confirm pregnancies much earlier. Am I getting better at noticing the signs of pregnancy? Theory 2: Raven started showing earlier because she has more puppies in her belly. Theory 2 sounds more plausible to me and since Raven started showing earlier in her third pregnancy we could be in for a big litter. That brings us back to one of the other questions we got on our blog a couple of years ago: How many puppies in a litter of Golden Retrievers? So, I have two questions for you guys today: When do you think Raven will have her puppies? How many puppies will Raven have in her third litter? If you have any questions or comments please leave us a note in our comment section below. If you guys are expecting a litter of puppies then you should check out our whelping checklist. It lists all the supplies we like to have before our litter of pups arrives. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark!
