Mypetzilla recommends taking your puppy or dog to the vet for a health check as soon as you take them home. It is also worth ringing the vet to confirm everything beforehand. Vaccinations must be up to date Check the puppy or dog is up-to-date with their vaccinations. All puppies should have received 2 vaccinations. The first vaccination should be given between weeks of age and the 2nd vaccination should be given no more than 2 weeks later when the puppy has reached the age of weeks. Older dogs may also need booster vaccinations and this is normally recommended by the vet. It's important that you check with the seller what vaccinations the puppy or dog has had. It's worth noting that puppies should have had their first vaccination before they leave their mother. If the seller has not provided a vaccination plan, then it will be your responsibility to make sure you arrange both vaccinations 7 days before letting your puppy go outside. Check the puppies have had their treatment for worms and fleas It is recommended that all puppies should be wormed at the age of 2 weeks and then receive another treatment at the age of 5 weeks old. Before the puppy leaves the seller, they should have had more worming treatment at 8 to 12 weeks of age. Check to see if the puppies have been socialised It's necessary that the puppies have interacted well with their puppy litter and have been raised in a home environment around other adults, children, and general household life. Puppies that don't receive this kind of training and development from a young age, may go on to develop behavioural problems later in their life and become difficult to train. They may likely develop temperament issues and will find it difficult to adjust to family life. Kennel Club registration? It's worth considering to check the documentation and phoning the Kennel Club to verify the registration. Check the Puppy has been microchipped This is a very important point and is also law abiding. From the 6th April , it is required by Law that all dogs over 8 weeks of age are microchipped and that the keeper's details are registered in their name and are kept up-to-date. You must make sure you receive the microchip documentation with the chip number and then arrange to change the microchip details into your name. You can find out more information about this by visiting our puppy and dog microchipping article. During rest, a healthy dog will take between 15 and 35 breaths per minute BPM. Your dog will pant considerably faster while doing exercise. A breathing rate greater than 45 BPM, when a dog is in the resting phase, is considered unhealthy and should be investigated. To find out how many breaths per minute your dog is taking, record his chest motions for 15 seconds and multiply by four. There are several causes of heavy panting in German Shepherds. These GSD, which is also called Alsatian, can tolerate both hot and cold weather as they have their standard stock coat. But not too hot nor too cold. They can survive in hot weather only if they have a place to drink cold water, and shade is accessible. But be informed that they dig up in frozen dirt during the summer season to cool themselves. Medical Condition One Veterinarian advises that if the owner tried everything already and the dog any breed still breathes or pants heavily and continuously, this may mean that they have a particular chronic health issue that needs to be treated right away. Cardiovascular conditions such as heartworm disease, heart problem, and Dilated Cardiomyopathy or Heart Disease caused by insufficient blood and oxygen pumped to the body where the heart becomes enlarged, build up fluids in the lungs, and thinner ventricular and chamber walls. For some time, observation is much needed. However, if the obvious signs or complications arise, take them already to the vet! Indigestion Have you even notice your GSD eating or biting almost anything they see! Nonetheless, these can cause reasons for indigestion or even obstruction. Your German Shepherds might have eaten something that was spoiled already. You can also say that they might have eaten big chunks of bones or objects that were stuck down to their throat. Just bring them to a real vet for a faster and effective treatment! Stress or Anxiety This might not be news to you, but German Shepperd is a social dog that can be usually found in the residential area. They are loyal and close to humans. This is also a reason why they can get separation anxiety. They breathe slowly and loudly once they experience stress or anxiety. This is because when they are left alone, they become really stressed. But only because they have this love and desire to keep their owners safe and close. How sweet! Another cause of their stress that can make them pant heavily is noise pollution. This includes the sound of fireworks, thunderstorms, heavy speakers, and basically noise everywhere! Faster breathing And so on. .In that case, you have to first and foremost limit the exposure of your dog to heat. After that, you have to consult your vet. The vet will be able to prescribe the proper treatment for heatstroke. Once you opt for that treatment, faster breathing will reduce as well. High Temperature Many times, German shepherds are also negatively impacted by the temperature outside. They might not come in direct contact with the sun. However, if the temperature is on the higher side, their breathing might become fast as well. The best way to tackle is to place them in a shaded area and provide them with plenty of water. Even then, if the faster breathing of the German shepherd does not subside, it is a good idea to contact the vet. Allergy Another cause of the faster breathing of German Shepherd is an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction can be to food, material, or other things. That is why, if you have introduced anything new to your German shepherd, that is probably resulting in faster breathing in one way or the other. If that is the cause, you have to revert to the earlier diet. Once you do so, the breathing will also come to normal. Because of Medication Side effects of medication is another reason why the breathing of your German shepherd might become faster. Certain medications can increase the heart rate of your German shepherd. When that happens, breathing will also increase. Since the cause is medicine, it is a good idea to contact your vet for a remedy. Respiratory Problems In some cases, the respiratory problem can also result in faster breathing. In that case, until you treat the cause, it will become difficult for you to stop the faster breathing of your German shepherd. I will go into the symptoms of respiratory problems below. These are the most common causes why German shepherds have faster breathing. In many cases, even when your dog is resting or sleeping, the breathing can become fast as well. Wondering why does that happens? I will highlight the same below. It has been proven in animals and humans that dreams can result in physical reactions from your body. In the dream, your dog might be chasing or playing around. In that case, the breathing of your dog will simulate that activity. Since while running, breathing becomes faster, the German shepherd may be breathing faster is because of dreaming. Unfortunately, in that case, you cannot do much. It is not a good idea to wake up your German shepherd as well. However, if that happens pretty often, you will have no other alternative but to contact your vet. Before determining whether your German shepherd is breathing fast or normal, it is essential to know the normal level. Ideally, a German Shepherd should breathe between 20 to 34 breaths per minute. Only when the rate is above that can you conclude that the German shepherd is breathing fast. As I have highlighted above, one of the causes of German Shepherd breathing fast is respiratory problems. It is essential to know the symptoms of respiratory problems to determine the cause. What are the signs of respiratory problems? Besides faster breathing, the other signs of respiratory problems include: 1. Coughing The number 1 sign is coughing. If your German shepherd is coughing regularly, that is another sign that the dog has respiratory distress. Nasal Congestion Along with faster breathing, if your dog also suffers from nasal congestion, it is clear that the dog is suffering from respiratory problems. If all these symptoms persist, it is a clear-cut indication of a respiratory problem. Intolerance To Exercise German shepherds are quite active dogs. However, the older German dogs can become intolerant to exercise. After becoming intolerant, they will suffer from respiratory problems and faster breathing if they indulge in exercise. Then, the solution is to discourage them from exercise in that case. Still, if the problem persists, you have to contact your vet. Only the vet can provide you with a treatment for the long-term solution to this problem. Panting Panting is another reason why a German Shepherd might end up breathing fast. It can result in various other respiratory problems as well. These are the symptoms of respiratory problems, along with faster breathing. If you notice any of them, you can directly point to a single cause of fast breathing. In case your dog has respiratory problems, you have to contact your vet as soon as possible. In many cases, medication might be needed. You have to keep in mind that respiratory problems will not go away with time or when you ignore them. You need to find a particular solution for them. Only once you do so you can treat them. Let me warn you; the solution is not instantaneous or easy. You might have to opt for longer-term treatment. However, you cannot ignore the respiratory problems of your dog either. That is why contacting the vet and starting the treatment as soon as possible is the only solution. Conclusion So, there are quite a few key reasons Why do german shepherds breathe so fast. Some of these reasons can be tackled on your own. Some of them require a change in the schedule of your German shepherd. However, some reasons are quite serious. In that case, the only option which you have is to contact your vet. Once you go through my guide above, it will become easier for you to pinpoint the cause. After pinpointing the cause, I have highlighted the action steps which you should take as well. In a nutshell, after going through this guide, there should be no confusion regarding the faster breathing of your German shepherd or what you should do after that. Post navigation. There are a number of reasons why a German Shepherd is breathing fast, and most of them are going to be fairly easy to manage. Typically, you are looking at a minimum of 2 hours of exercise a day for adult Shepherds, and young pups between 3 and 5 months old are typically going to need 30 — 45 minutes a day. Take a note of how long the fast breathing lasts, and if your dog gets it under control fairly quickly then, insufficient exercise might be the culprit. Heart problems can cause fast breathing and a number of diseases, so if the behavior has started fairly recently, then a vet check-up is a good idea at this time. A little time in the shade and some water should help you to see if this is the case. However, if you see signs like drooling, diarrhea, or even seizures, it could actually be a heat stroke! Signs of an allergic reaction may include hives, inflamed skin, diarrhea, and vomiting. Shepherds are very active dogs and generally on the large side, so they are going to require more oxygen when they are out and at play. Unless this behavior is very new, then there might not be a problem at all. Is Your German Shepherd Overweight? If your German Shepherd is a little on the overweight side, then a bit of fast breathing is to be expected. Reaction to New Medications May Cause Heavy Breathing If your vet has recently prescribed some new medication for your dog, then this might be the culprit. Check the side effects associated with the medication, and then you will want to contact your vet. They may be able to prescribe a different medication or a specific regimen for your dog while they are taking it. There are a number of ways to determine if your German Shepherd is breathing a bit on the fast side. One of the first things you should do is try counting their breaths while they are sleeping. This helps to give you a baseline rate with which to compare by. If your dog is breathing fast, listen for any sounds that might give a clue to the reason behind it. Wheezing, for an instant, may be a sign of allergies, and high-pitched sounds may indicate an obstruction located in the upper airway. Contact your vet if you encounter any of the following systems. If you see this, an immediate vet visit is required, and your dog will likely be placed in an oxygen chamber in order to get their breathing under control so that the source of the issue can be identified. If Your Dog Is Vomiting If your dog is panting fast and includes vomiting, you will want to contact your vet for further investigation. It could be an allergic reaction which we will detail a bit more shortly , or if it is very hot outside, then you might be seeing signs of heatstroke. A little shade and a wet towel can help you to cool down your dog, and then you will want to get in touch with your vet immediately. Sudden, Excessive Drooling Excessive drooling is another sign to watch out for. While it is one of the symptoms of heatstroke, it may also indicate an abscessed tooth that your vet will need to deal with to get your dog feeling better and breathing more normally. If You See Signs of an Allergic Reaction Signs of an allergic reaction include itching, hives, skin discoloration, and in some cases, vomiting, sneezing, and diarrhea. It could be that your dog has eaten something or may have been stung by an insect, and they are reacting to this. Your vet will be able to run some tests and confirm if this is the case. Signs of Heat Stroke Drooling, diarrhea, and seizures are all warning signs that your dog may be having a heat stroke. An X-ray and a number of tests will be required to see what is causing this distress, but this is definitely a sign that you do not want to ignore. Keep Your Dog Cool Be sure to pack plenty of water and some towels that you can get to help your Shepherd keep cool. This is important on days when it is very hot out, as these large dogs can quickly overheat if you are not careful. More Exercise Might Be the Answer If your adult Shepherd is not getting 2 hours of exercise a day, then it is a good idea to change your daily routine up for some extra trips for walking or playing outside. Shepherds are very active dogs, and so this daily exercise is an important part of keeping your dog happy and healthy. Sudden, fast breathing that was not occurring before may be caused by a number of things, and testing with your vet can help rule out any illness or injury. This is especially common with rescue animals who may have undergone trauma before you took them home. If you think that this might be the case, your vet can help you to determine the best medications and training strategies to help your dog with this. Cheaper than replacing everything they might break. And definitely cheaper than a lawsuit against you, if they decide to bite someone. And the best part is it also has a day money-back guarantee! FAQ Below, we have answers to some of the most common questions we receive regarding German Shepherds and their breathing patterns. A healthy adult Shepherd will have an average rate of 15 — 35 breaths per minute while at rest. If your Shepherd is breathing at 40 breaths per minute or higher when at rest, then you will definitely want to check with your vet to investigate and determine the cause. Why is my German Shepherd breathing fast at night? If your Shepherd is breathing fast at night, in some cases, they might just be dreaming. If the fast breathing is fairly consistent, however, this is a definite reason for a check-up with your local vet to determine what is going on. Count the beats for approximately 15 seconds and then multiply this number by 4. This should give you the number of beats per minute. For temperature, the easiest method is a thermometer treat with water-based lubricant so that you can check the inside one of their eyes. Finally, for the breathing rate, you should be able to simply count the breaths per minute, and if they are over 40 when the dog is at rest, then you should be concerned. Related Posts:. Final thoughts Heat and humidity The German shepherd is extremely sensitive to heat and humidity and will breathe and pant profusely if left tied up or confined in a hot environment. This is an involuntary reaction to heat or high temperatures, and although it may be uncomfortable for the dog, your German Shepherd cannot control his heavy breathing. Panting is also a way for the German Shepherd to cool down, which he does by evaporating water from his tongue and mouth. Their long digestive tracts allow this process to release heat slowly rather than abruptly. The heavier the coat of fur, the slower the heat dissipation process. Recovering from Exercise A dog that is exercised heavily will also pant. German shepherds are a high-energy breed and need plenty of exercise to stay healthy. If you suspect your dog is panting too heavily because of exercise, stop for a few minutes to allow the respiratory system to recover. Avoid exercising your dog too much in hot weather, and always provide plenty of fresh, clean water to drink. This will ensure your German Shepherd remains healthy and does not overheat. Stress or anxiety Breathing hard is also a common reaction in stressed or anxious dogs. This can happen when they are at the veterinary surgery, during grooming, or when faced with an unfamiliar situation. Some dogs become anxious when a stranger comes over if a certain visitor arrives, or someone goes outside of the house without them. Dogs will also pant under these circumstances if they have separation anxiety because they feel anxious about being alone in the house. In many cases, the panting will go away once the dog gets used to the person or situation causing them anxiety. One is to make sure they get plenty of exercise. A tired dog is less likely to be anxious. You can also try training your dog using positive reinforcement. This will help them feel more confident and secure in their surroundings. Long digestive tracts The cooling process takes longer for these dogs because of the length of their digestive tracts, so bony areas such as their noses are susceptible to overheating. It may also be easier for them to breathe through the mouth since it allows air to pass over larger surfaces due to the size of their noses. Experiencing pain Dogs will also pant when they are in pain, as this is a way for the body to release endorphins, which are hormones that help reduce pain. He may be experiencing pain from an injury or illness. Ingestion of Toxins Ingestion of toxins can cause dogs to pant excessively. The most common toxins dogs consume are chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic. This can be harmful and even fatal to your dog. If he ingests any of these and begins to pant heavily, take him straight to the veterinarian or animal hospital right away. Pregnancy Female german shepherds may pant heavily during pregnancy. This is because the increased blood flow and added weight can make it difficult for the dog to breathe. The puppies will also take in more oxygen than usual, so you may notice your dog panting even more when they are nursing. Heatstroke If your German Shepherd is panting heavily, this serious condition requires veterinary attention, so take your dog to the nearest clinic immediately. German shepherds are more susceptible to heatstroke than other breeds because of their large size. If your dog is panting heavily and you see that he is also vomiting, has diarrhea, or is staggering around, he may be suffering from heatstroke. Ensure that you move him to a cool environment immediately in these situations. Heart disease Some dogs pant heavily because they have heart disease. This is common in older dogs and can be caused by various problems such as a malfunctioning heart valve or an enlarged heart. Why does my German Shepherd breathe so fast while sleeping? There are several reasons why a german shepherd would breathe heavily while sleeping. One of the most common reasons is allergies. If this sounds like your dog, you should consult with your veterinarian about an allergy treatment plan that might reduce excessive breathing during sleep time. Another reason for heavy panting while sleeping is heart failure. Heart failure can cause many different symptoms, including fast breathing, coughing, and labored breathing. If your GSD is exhibiting any other symptoms such as vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, or swelling in the extremities, it is essential to take them to the vet for a check-up. The last potential reason for heavy breathing while sleeping is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition that causes a dog to stop breathing for short periods during sleep. This can be dangerous if untreated because it can lead to heart problems, seizures, and even death. If you think your dog might have sleep apnea, then you should consult with your veterinarian about getting them tested. What is the average respiration rate for German Shepherds? In general, however, the average respiration rate for german shepherds is about 30 breaths per minute. This means that a dog takes in about 30 breaths of air every minute. Why is it important to know the average respiration rate for German shepherds? Knowing the average respiration rate for german shepherds can be helpful for owners and breeders. By learning how often a dog typically breathes, people can better understand when a dog is breathing too fast or too slow and may need veterinary attention. Additionally, this information can help people select healthy dogs for breeding. Final thoughts In general, it is normal for a German shepherd to breathe hard, which should not cause concern. However, if your dog is panting excessively or breathing in an abnormal manner, it is important to consult with your veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical issues.

Understanding their various traits and characteristics can help ensure that you are selecting the best fit for you and your family. American Golden Retrievers, the most common type, typically have a smaller frame and a light-colored coat. They are often bred for show and, therefore, tend to be sociable and friendly. British Golden Retrievers, on the other hand, have a larger frame and a darker-colored coat. They are known for their intelligence and excellent sense of smell, and typically carved for hunting or rescue roles. Finally, Canadian Golden Retrievers are a hybrid breed, resulting from crossing American and British Goldens together. As such, they boast the best of both worlds, having a strong build and a moderate coloring. Canadian Goldens tend to acquire both the good-naturedness of their American relatives, as well as the keen senses of their British kin. In short, understanding the different types of Golden Retrievers is a great way to be sure you are selecting the best fit for your lifestyle and needs. Whether you are looking for a show dog, a hunting dog, or just a companion, there is a Golden Retriever type out there that is perfect for you. Tips for Grooming and Caring for a Golden Retriever Grooming and caring for a Golden Retriever is an integral part of owning this breed of dog. Not only do these cheerful and affectionate pooches need regular physical care, it is also important for them to receive mental and emotional stimulation. Here are some tips for keeping your Golden Retriever looking and feeling their best. When it comes to grooming, Golden Retrievers need to be brushed regularly. This helps to reduce the amount of shedding and keep their coat clean and healthy. For an extra layer of protection against dirt and debris, you can use a detangling spray or shampoo specifically designed for this breed. Regularly trimming their nails is also essential to keeping their paws healthy and uncluttered. To make the process smoother, invest in some quality clippers and introduce them to the process slowly, by rewarding them with treats. Another important aspect of Golden Retriever care is providing them with plenty of exercise and activities. Going on daily walks and playing various active games, such as fetch , are great ways to ensure that they stay physically fit and mentally stimulated. Additionally, these activities provide bonding time between the two of you, which is important for strengthening your relationship and helping your pup stay happy and healthy. With proper grooming and mental stimulation, your Golden Retriever will be able to enjoy a long and healthy lifestyle. By following these tips, you can ensure that your furry friend looks and feels their best. This entry was posted in Entertainment , Hobby , Pet. Bookmark the permalink. Veronika M. How to teach your dog to swim. Natural Swimmers? It should naturally to them right? We found out first hand that not all Labradors are comfortable in the water, and that in some cases, you might need to teach your Lab to swim. Swimming is such a great exercise for your dog. Swimming is low impact and easy on their joints and the water can be refreshing to their achy muscles. We are always looking for alternative exercises for our two seniors, Jack and Maggie so we thought swimming would be an excellent choice. We adopted Jack and Maggie several years ago. Jack was in the shelter for over a year and Maggie was in a puppy mill situation as a breeder mom. Both of them were more interested in scraps of food on the beach than romping in the water and we really had to coax them into going near it. There was some wading, but no swimming. Repeated Attempts We tried again at a local park that had a small stream running through it. We got the same reaction — lots of curiosity about the wildlife along the shore, but not much interest in the water. We tried once more at a local doggie day spa that had a pool — same reaction. Maggie refused to even go in the water. We were about to give up on having water dogs. As a last ditch effort, we decided to vacation at Big Bear Lake in California. We got a cabin on the lake that had a dock and we figured this would be it, they would finally learn to swim and maybe even learn to jump off the dock. Any water, even a puddle and they were in it as quickly and as deeply as they could get. But not Jack. First we tried walking him out into the water. Finally, my husband picked him up and carried him out to where it was over his head. There was panic in his eyes, much splashing and a hasty retreat to shore. Maggie was also a little apprehensive when we brought her to the edge of the lake. Yet she waded into the water on her own, wandered around, waded in deeper, wandered around some more and then just kept going and was off swimming just as smooth and beautifully as only Labs can swim — hardly a ripple and just her little head above the surface. You may be lucky and have a dog like Maggie who just takes to it naturally. Or you may have one like Jack who thinks the water is only good if it deposits fish to the shore for him to eat. Either way, we put together a few tips on helping your Lab get comfortable with the water. Your own backyard pool is great or a lake with a gradual incline into the water is also a great place to start. Be sure your dog is comfortable wherever you are. Get a life vest. It will help your dog feel more secure and buoyant in the water. They also come with handles on the top, so you can lift and steer your dog more easily. Go into the water with them. They will always feel safer and more comfortable if you are with them. Just watch out for their claws as their dog paddle style can end up leaving scratch marks all over your body. If your dog is small enough, pick them up and carry them into the water to a point where they can no longer touch bottom. Support them evenly underneath and try to keep their body level to encourage them to use all four limbs. Once he realized to use his back legs, it was smooth sailing. Let them set the pace for how deep and how fast they go in the water. Use a toy or treats as encouragement or rewards. Many Labs love to play fetch and will happily chase a stick or tennis ball or duck into the water. How to teach your dog to swim. Natural Swimmers? It should naturally to them right? Many Labs love to play fetch and will happily chase a stick or tennis ball or duck into the water. And if you are the parent of a Labrador, you may be wondering do labs like to swim? Swimming could be another way to keep them entertained and change up their exercise routine. Do Labradors like to swim? Yes, Labradors are natural swimmers who enjoy taking a dip in lakes, streams, and even pools. They are genetically designed to adapt well to the water. They have webbed toes to propel them and short but insulating fur to keep them warm, without weighing them down. Your Lab will likely need a little coaxing to go into the water and may even jump in on their own. This means you need to know whether they will enjoy swimming, how to introduce them to it, and how long a good swimming session for them will last. In this article, you will learn exactly why Labradors like to swim and how to get them started with this great form of exercise. I have owned my lab for 14 years, and from the time she was little, we have found ways to introduce her to things she will enjoy, such as the water. Getting my Lab, Bear, into the water, turned out to be one of the best things that we could do for her, especially as she began to age. When her joints became sore, swimming was a way for her to continue to exercise pain-free to help maintain her weight and keep her respiratory and cardiovascular systems healthy. Do Labradors like water? They enjoy the water, which can make it easier to bathe them and also allow them to enjoy activities such as swimming. Labradors were bred to be the perfect water dogs. They are born with a double coat and short fur. The double coat provides them with the extra insulation they need if the water temperature is cooler, and the short fur helps to keep them warm but does not provide extra weight when they are swimming. Labrador dogs can trace their ancestry to the dogs of the North American Indians. The descendants of these dogs were used by the settlers of Newfoundland to hunt and rescue people from cold water. After the Europeans adopted the breed, they began to use them to work with Portuguese anglers due to their familiarity and ease with the water. They could even help corral networks of fish as well as rescue overboard fishermen. Not only are labs physiologically bred to enjoy swimming with their webbed paws, double coat, and short fur, but they have the personality traits that make swimming enjoyable for them. They are considered sport dogs , which means they enjoy being active and getting exercise whenever they can. This can mean they have a lot of energy as well, and as long as that energy is directed towards physical activities, they are less likely to engage in destructive behaviors at home. On top of that, labs love to play and interact, and if they see the family enjoying a dip in the water, they are excited to join in with the festivities. Throwing sticks or balls at the beach for your Lab to retrieve from the water will likely become one of their favorite activities. This can be true especially when it is hot. Like humans, Labs get hot when working out in warm temperatures and the cool water allows them to work out longer without getting overheated. And one of the most compelling reasons that Labs like water is the fact that it is in their genes. They are descended from dogs who loved the water and were used in water rescue situations. This is the reason you will find that even small Lab puppies will try to jump right in when they are around water. Their genetic code draws them to it. Combining fetch with swimming is a great activity for your Lab Want to know where to take your dog swimming? Read this article. You would be hard-pressed to find a lab that does not enjoy swimming. You may not even realize that your lab enjoys the water until they run into it, or in the case of mine, they run off the end of the dock to go fetch a ball. That being said, if your Lab is a rescue dog and has experienced some sort of trauma involving water or swimming, they may develop an aversion to it. If you notice this behavior, there is likely some underlying reason, and it is best not to push it. Are Labradors Good Swimmers? Now that you know labs like to swim, you may want to know how good a swimmer they actually are. Labs are not only good swimmers, but they are also considered fast swimmers. Their webbed toes help them to swim more rapidly. Their short fur also makes them more streamlined in the water. Labradors can swim over three miles an hour. This is extremely impressive when many dogs look like they struggle to simply keep their head above water. But this speed can also cause a problem with a dog that is not trained. They can get out far in the water pretty quickly. This can make it dangerous, especially if they are swimming in a lake that has a lot of boating activity or large lakes where they may not have the energy to return. So until you have them trained to come when they are called, it is best to keep them by you when swimming. Train them to come outside of water first, as shown in the video below. Labs can swim fast and even dive. That makes them the perfect breed for the dog sport of dock diving. Beginning swimmers should only swim for ten-minute sessions, working up until they can tolerate a minute session. As with humans, your dog will reach a point during swimming where they could become fatigued, making it harder for them to swim and possibly too difficult for them to return to shore. Even though they know how to swim without being taught, just like humans, they have to work their stamina up for longer swims. They will simply need to take breaks after each swimming session. Your lab puppy will be ready to swim after approximately eight weeks. By this point, they will have begun developing the physical muscle strength that they need to swim, but you should start them off in shallow water. By about three months old, their strength will be mostly developed, and they can begin venturing out into deeper water. If you want to know if puppies can swim in a pool, read our article here. Important Safety Tips When Taking Your Labs Swimming It is important to remember that when labs are young, just because they have mastered the skill of swimming, it does not mean they are completely aware of all of their surroundings. Exiting pools safely If you have your lab swimming in a pool, you should always make sure that they know where to get out and how to navigate the steps to get out. Otherwise, they can become panicked, trying to climb out on a wall that they can not get up. Clean water If you are taking them swimming in a lake or pond, always make sure that the water is clean. If it is not clean enough for you to swim in, it would not be clean enough for them. Being more visible on a lake Also, if they are swimming in an inland lake, it may not be a bad idea to put a life jacket on them. While they will not need it to stay afloat, the bright colors can alert a boater or jet skier to their presence. Otherwise, they may be too hard to see and can become injured. Even dogs who are strong swimmers will not be able to handle rough currents or high waves. Again if it is not safe for you, it is not safe for them. For peace of mind, we recommend a life jacket see below or a 4-foot long waterproof lead that you attach to yourself. You might also want to buy a waterproof dog collar to go with the lead. Fits any dog with five sizes available. Has handles for you to hold your pup up good for training your pup in water or grab him suddenly. Comes in bright colors so you can see your dog in the water. Three colors available. Has one grab handle. Has a reflective edging too for extra visibility. Wearing a life jacket not only makes your Labrador more visible but also provides you with peace of mind about their safety in the water Monitor their energy levels No matter where you have them swimming, you should always monitor them for signs of fatigue or overexertion. If they seem to be struggling, moving slower, or panting more than normal, they may have worked out too much and be in need of assistance. Remember Labradors can swim for a maximum of minute blocks: they need rest breaks in between. Here are some great toys to accompany a swim. All these toys float. May 31, Our sweet boy Ikey now has a partner! Then there was the new collar, the new harness, the new vest. I have never been fussed over so much in my life. Quite frankly, I was not sure if this was going to be a good thing, or a bad thing. Humans will sometimes try to sneak a trip to the vet or nail cutting in between all the loving and petting. Then I had a lot of special visitors — I got to see my mom and dad from my very first home, and my puppy raisers Laurie and Dana too! Another visitor came to the kennel. I got to come out of my kennel to greet him, but curiously none of the other dogs got to come out. I brought him a toy, which is really the only polite thing for a Labrador to do when he has a guest. Then I climbed in his lap and licked his face, which perhaps you might not consider to be polite, but he seemed to enjoy it and I know I did. Then my new friend, whose name is Luke, took me outside to play for a while. We said goodbye and I went back to my kennel, but curiously, Luke came back the next day and we trained some more. Then the next day, and the next — it got to be so I was pretty excited to see Luke every morning. Especially since no one else seemed to be paying much attention to me anymore. Let me tell you though, we worked hard. Every day, four hours a day, for three weeks! We worked on all my obedience and my special skills; we drove in the car; we went to the vet I KNEW it!!! I will admit that I slept through most of the lectures and videos, though. And I think I caught Luke napping during one or two of them too. Here are some of the things that Luke and I do together. He tries to trick me by accidentally dropping something when he is walking. I have to grab it and return it to him. We also play the timer game. When the timer goes off, I have to go find Luke and poke him with my nose until he pays attention. Same thing when someone knocks on the door — I have to run and get Luke and poke him with my nose until he will follow me to the door. Or sometimes Luke asks me to find her and I have to go bring Cat to Luke. Either way, that is paws-down my favorite game! I can do other things for Luke too. Sometimes he may get dizzy and I will help steady him to sit or stand. I turn on the lights on the stairway so he can keep his hand on the railing. Being out in busy and noisy places can be pretty stressful for humans as well as dogs, apparently, but Luke and I have a secret sign. Then we usually just go find a quiet place to sit down and snuggle. After our three weeks of hard work, I went home with Luke. Luke and I still work hard every day and we come back to Hero Dogs once a week for more practice. Luke and I are tight. Ike had a field trip today to our local commuter train station. It's highly likely that in his lifetime as a service dog, Ike and his partner will need to take public transportation. It's crucial to make these experiences fun for Ike. To that end, I brought lots of yummy treats. Not just any treats, though. I brought the really yummy and smelly stuff: feta cheese and tiny pieces of grilled pork chop leftover from dinner a few nights ago. Ike doesn't normally get this really delicious stuff in his everyday training. Going to WalMart isn't a big deal to him now. Going with me while I get my hair cut is old hat. The treats I use for those locations are more mundane but still pretty tasty because he's used to those situations. But a train station? That's big. And potentially scary. The grilled pork and feta cheese helped Ike create favorable associations with the potentially scary train. The noise of the station, lurching left and right on the train ride, the hustle and bustle of people, and the screeching and banging that a fast-moving train makes — any one of those could have thrown Ike into a tail spin. The feta and grilled pork helped ensure that his train ride was a fabulous experience. In addition to the really good food, I was careful to lower my standards for Ike. He was in a strange place. With lots of odd sounds. And almost every person there was a stranger to him. So instead of asking him for newly trained behaviors, I asked him for the very easy ones — the behaviors he's been doing since he was a pup. And he got paid BIG for each of those behaviors! This allowed Ikey to build up his confidence, to realize he really could lie down even on the rocking and rolling train. He really could sit as the train came into the station. If you're raising a puppy, remember to use very good food treats when you're taking your pup somewhere new. Also remember to lower your standards if you're training somewhere distracting or potentially scary. Let your dog take his time exploring and deciding when he feels comfortable. The more positive experiences your pup has, the more likely he'll become a confident, well-mannered dog. There's a lot more training ahead for Ike. Next time we go back, we'll likely raise his criteria slightly — maybe I'll ask him to sit for a little longer. Or expect him to watch me a little more. And maybe he'll get the feta and grilled pork every second or third treat. But by really upping the treat value this first time, I've created a positive association with trains and with training. And that's priceless.

This price range might still increase, especially if you opt for a puppy from a champion bloodline or one with rare coat color. Compared to both cousin dog breeds, purebred English Bulldogs cost more due to the extra care needed during birth. A pregnant British Bulldog must be closely monitored once it reaches its final stages of pregnancy. Female Bulldog: Which Is Better? Besides papers and registry documents, bloodline, age, and coat color are also some factors that could affect the average price of your Bulldog. Here is a detailed list of the factors that affect the price range of an English Bulldog: Age: English Bulldog puppies cost more than seniors or adult dogs because they are healthier and more active. Senior dogs often have tons of health issues that need immediate medical attention, while puppies are a joy to be with because they are at the prime of their health. Gender: Female English Bulldogs may cost you a bit more than a male because of their breeding potential. Potential owners and Bully enthusiasts also request a female pup more than males because of their better temperament. The demand pushes the price of female English Bulldogs to a higher cost. Rarer colors like tri-color , merle , and blue English Bulldogs are typically much more expensive. Bloodline: A champion English Bulldog puppy might cost three to four times as much as typical English Bulldog puppies. They are known to exhibit the best physique, temperament, and health. Plus, they are perfect for competitions. Reputable breeders often have a long history of breeding success. Their high prices are also backed by health guarantees and other safeguards. Health Screenings: Before selling their puppies, many breeders evaluate them for health problems. They sell their puppy for a higher price if it is deemed to be in excellent health. Regardless, it is still a good idea to look for an English Bulldog puppy that comes with a health guarantee. With this list, you might already have your own cost estimation for the pup you want. English Bullies that have been rescued have already been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and have complete registration documents. Before being put up for adoption, they undergo retraining and behavioral rehabilitation as well. Rescues often house more adult Bullies as puppies are more likely to be adopted immediately. To help you in purchasing, we have compiled a list of all the initial expenses for owning an English Bulldog: Food and Treats: One of the basic items you should get for your English Bulldog is high-quality dog food and a few treat packages for on-hand training. You may need to buy a few of them to see which one works best for your dog. As a fairly slobber-ish canine, you might have a hard time cleaning leftover dog food from a cheap container. Bed: To prevent your English Bulldog from abnormal physical disorders, it is best to invest in a high-quality dog bed. A crate may also be a safe haven for your dog when you are not home or when you have visitors. Leashes and Collars: Some of the first things you should get for your English Bulldog are leashes and collars. Be sure to get one that is a good fit for your dog. Metal nameplates included in these items that are less likely to corrode might cost a little extra. Toys: Chew toys that are easy to pick up and clean are ideal for English Bulldogs. Choose interactive and sturdy toys that will stimulate their high intelligence and withstand their strong jaws. Grooming Essentials: Brushing English Bulldogs a few times a week should keep them looking nice, and their shedding would be manageable. Cleaning moisture that could be trapped under their wrinkles is also a must. Nail clippers and a doggy toothbrush are good investments, too. Initial Vet Visits: English Bulldog puppies require initial vet examinations to ensure that they are healthy. Dog License: For an English Bulldog puppy, a license is a necessity. The dog microchip should have all your important contact information as the owner, increasing the chances of your Bully being returned to you as soon as possible if they get lost. The English Bulldog price tag is really just the beginning of the overall cost when you bring one of these wrinkly pups into your family. English Bulldogs are one of the most expensive dog breeds out there, undoubtedly due to their popularity. This can be higher from the most reputable breeders. There are all kinds of different ways to encounter English Bulldog puppies or adults! You should weigh the pros and cons of each purchasing option to decide which is best for you and your family. Each of the routes to acquire an English Bulldog come with different price ranges as well as other pros and cons that should be considered. Not all breeders are made equal though. If you buy a pup from a careless breeder, your puppy could suffer from health problems. This can be very costly down the road. To ensure your breeder is looking after the best interests of his or her stock, request that they provide health clearances for their puppies. This will help you ensure that the breeder treats their dogs well, and takes care to breed healthy stock. Dogs purchased from breeders tend to be on the more costly end of the price scale. If the price is lower than that, beware, it could be a sign of a careless breeder. This is especially important with English Bulldogs, as they are prone to numerous health issues. Adopting a dog is also a wonderful way to give an adult dog a new lease on life! This price certainly seems like a bargain compared to that of a puppy from a breeder! Additionally, dog rescue organizations usually ensure that their adoptable dogs are up to date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered. With this in mind, adoption fees are a bargain! This may seem daunting, but rescues typically do try their best to get to know their dogs and place them with appropriate families. English Bulldog Cost of Ownership Despite being some of the most easy-going pups, bulldog breeds tend to have a higher cost of ownership than others. This inflated cost is largely due to the health problems that are commonly found in this breed. Many of the health issues that English Bulldogs experience are not life-threatening, but accommodating them can still cost a lot. English Bulldogs have a condition called Brachycephaly, which means they have a flat muzzle and an underbite. While their smushed faces are what endear them to many admirers of the breed, they do create health complications which can drastically affect English Bulldog price. Some bullies will suffer from Brachycephalic Syndrome which can result in difficulty breathing or even collapsed airways. The shape of their snout also means that these roly-poly puppies are highly susceptible to overheating in hot weather. English Bulldogs are also prone to obesity, which can cause joint problems such as Hip Dysplasia and Patellar Luxation. Also, because your Bulldog has a lot of teeth in a small jaw, he is more likely to have dental problems. As you can see, many potential health issues can crop up with this breed. Some may require ongoing medication, or veterinary visits, which result in ongoing expenses for you. Because this breed is prone to so many health issues, purchasing pet insurance may be in your best interest. You should also budget for things like: Dog walking or doggy daycare Food. Replacement costs of these types of goodies will range based on how quickly your Bulldog destroys their current supply. You can also order subscription packs from many reputable companies that give your dog new exploratory items every month. Since these dogs are at risk for many health complications, save as much as you can—erring on the side of caution. The best time for obedience lessons is between 6 months to a year, but every trainer varies in preference. Depending on the treatment, you could spend thousands of dollars in one swoop. Pet sitting is more personalized care but can rack up extra fees. If you want to save as much as possible while still giving your Bulldog the care they need, look at these money-saving tips. They mainly offer spay and neuter surgeries at reduced costs, but they can also provide basic care. You can make anything from dog toys to intricate beds. Many things you can make may not even require going to the store for materials—you can simply make them from existing items at home. Auto-Ship Dog Food If you buy your dog food from certain websites, many companies offer discounted prices if you place an automatic, recurring order. Of course, you can always save on English Bulldog costs by using low-cost services and making tons of at-home projects and toys for your pooch.
